Part three, here we go!

The pair of Super J's, and a cab that shows what they can do.

Building this cab opened up the doors for what a Dingwall can do.

I'm looking forward to the Super J 5 P pickup. Looks like the Grand Wazoo got the first one out the door.

No six, but I do have a 5 also in whale pool blue. ;)

The only thing I have any want for is a fretless, and that want is pretty small these days. Next up is probably a Peavey IPR3k+a Demeter preamp.

Thanks! Its a Zebra 1 with the Voodoo body shape.The electronics are actually pretty simple. Its got an Aguilar OBP-1 (18v., chosen over the OBP-3) with Sheldon's proprietary hybrid treble control. The pickups are FD3.M2.4L, with parallel/series switching for each one. Its got the full 'matching' package pickups, headstock and block inlays. The body is dual density swamp ash, the neck is 5pc maple with maple board.

These days, I think it probably places somewhere between a Z and a Prima in the scale of things. It has options that I don't think are offered any more from back before Sheldon streamlined some of his options list. It pretty much has every option/upgrade available on the Zebra option/price sheet at the time, and some that weren't on the list.

I ordered the bass in November of 2005 and it was delivered in October of 2008. The wait these days is much shorter. :)

***an unknown little bit of info, Sheldon had a cool idea of a special lighting scheme for the neck. It would be very unlike any LED system available today. Unfortunately, after some work in that direction it didn't look like it would be a workable option. Maybe he'll keep stewing on the idea until something works out. :D

I'm pretty sure I've decided on what I want. My #1 decision is a purpleburst ABI. My second decision is an ABZ.

But here's one more dilemma I've run into... I mentioned in Part Two I am setting up the Dingwall for F# (with a Detuner to hit E0). What electronics would be better for those notes? Active or passive? I have an active bass setup for F# and it sounds pretty good.

Metal Matt has his P-bass setup for F# and he said it sounds amazing.

I've been playing with low notes for over a year now, but I'm curious to what might be better. If active is a much better route, I might go with a Combustion, or get an ABZ and put an active preamp in it.

What do you fine folk think?

Behold! The ABZ pickups are loud and powerful enough without the need for an active preamp. I have both an ABZ passive and an ABII 2 band eq with a glockenwatchamacallit inside and the only difference with the active one is the extra color provided by the bass and treble boost / cut eq knobs, however you must remember that on the ABZ if you turn the tone control all the way off, the sound goes deep and low without being muffled or dull. I suggest you try the ABZ and discover the same magic I have experienced after playing it for the first time in a store. There is a secret somewhere in that bass, and I believe its all in those clever neodymium p/ups.

Home safe and sound, I went to collect the new Super J and I took along with me another (Dingwall) forum member which I've met for the first time, jonnyrok101 (John) because he has a Super J 5 too and wanted to see how the P/J would be different from his own.
The bass plays superbly, very well setup, and oh boy! it's got one hell of a punch on the low B, I can't recommend enough that new Precision style pickup they've just brought out it's killer! The real P bass sound right at your fingertips but with a vengeance: turn the active preamp on and run for cover!
