FDV vs FD3. Can anyone tell me about the difference? Which one should I chose if the parallel J sound with oveis what I'm going for?

For a traditional J sound the FD3s in parallel is top notch. I cannot attest to the FDVs yet but this nails it. Also.... glockenklang.

And does the Darkglass preamp affect the sound in passive mode?
No, the preamp is removed from the circuit entirely in passive mode, so it has no effect whatsoever on the tone. To confirm this, I just did a test by removing and reinserting the batteries in the bass while playing in passive mode, and there was no change with the batteries in or out.

Exciting news at my local shop. Bass Club Chicago announced back at NAMM that it was becoming a dealer, now the basses are coming in. From FB:

Dingwall Guitars delivering next month! If we planned a party to celebrate, would you come? #dingwallbass #dingwallinchicago

Their site indicates they have 5 NG-3s and 2 D Bird Standards on order. Invalid Link Removed

Is it too much to hope that the D Bird Standards will be part of this delivery? I seem to recall hearing they won't be out for a while yet.
Exciting news indeed! Could it be that a bunch of NG3s (and D-Birds) will be arriving from China in Sheldon's new expanded set-up room in a couple of months? Don't want to get my hopes up but hope springs eternal!

This is a really tough question I think for any of us to give advice on with out knowing more as XNewyorka mentioned.... it’s almost as personal as your bass..... I mean aside from the fact that everyone here knows Dingwall is the best..... duh!! ;).

But what kind of sound your looking for with help you narrow down the selection. The music you play. The volume needed. The scenarios..

I love the sound of multi 10s. For a home rig I was even thinking 8s or some pjb but....... oops. Dreaming. I also like piano like tones and punch. I also like the height of 810 as I’m going deaf. I’m not sure why I would be going deaf standing in front of 12-1600 watts of awesome dingwallness coming out of 8 10 inch speakers......

But seriously I like height. I’ve played a few one cab Scenarios where I feel the sound just went right past my nuts.

I’ve been cab and speaker exploring for a couple years.
My fav is still my ampeg SVT4pro
And fridge. I find it has a more organic harmonic sound to it then most of the newer class D stuff. I’m not knocking it but I find most of it very sterilized.... too clean I guess
I’ve owned a few Ds and will continue to explore them.

My home rig is a Genz Benz 12.2
Which I have 2 epifani 410s sitting under and it is a real close rival to the ampeg. The beauty of the GB or other heads that have 2 outputs is you can cut your rig in half if desired. The GB has 2 600w@4ohm outputs so I could just use 1 410 if desired. I tried mixing an Aguilar 212 with 1 of the 410 and I didn’t think it worked at all. They didn’t compliment each other. Instead I think it just added mud where it wasn’t supposed to be. Switched to the second 410 And I’m back in tone town!!

Lots to consider. Buy used gear at a good price and resell it if it doesn’t work for you until you know exactly what you want.... then hit up @bebass for some genzler 410s when you win the lotto!! ;).

So many choices. Have fun with that and keep us posted what you get up to!!
So, I picked up a Bergantino 12 and a Tone Hammer 500. While I was there...I ended up getting another ABZ! This one is a 4 string with a Wenge neck! Absolutely killer! I am feeling out the Tone Hammer... Love the cab and the bass!!!

Yes! Love it! I grabbed a Tone Hammer 500...should I have gotten a Forte? What do you think?
Sounds like a great combo. If you like it. Enjoy it

From there explore if you want. It’s all about what you want to hear man. I’m down to 2 killer rigs that I really enjoy what I hear come out of them.
One day it may change and I’ll explore.

Tone hammers are awesome from my experience. Berg is so clean and crisp.

Does anybody know where I can get the Dingwall factory setup specs? I am particularly interested in pickup heights on SP5's (P/J).

The YouTube set up videos form Sheldon address pick up heights I believe but not specifically for P or J type basses. I’m notnsure if there is anything different but I wouldn’t think so.
If I recall correctly if you hold down on the last fret you want the pick up to sit about an 1/8 below the string with the string held down.

Thanks. I'll check the videos out. I forgot about those.

I seem to recall it written somewhere and I even thought I copied it and saved it somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. It is probably buried in the forum pages somewhere.

Wow, I would love to try a Reeves!

It's a large investment, but you won't ever need or want to buy another amp. Less expensive in the long run, IMO.
I had it built four years ago and it has performed flawlessly except for the marginal KT-88 that failed after six months.
It has a pleasantly 'big feel' that I've not gotten from any other amp I've plugged into (except the SVT I would occasionally plug into at a local music store back in the day)...
