I bought a used Combustion a couple of years ago.
What I loved about the bass was its light weight and the multiscale neck. I thought it sounded really good, but not great.
I changed the tuners because I wanted them to be black.
I changed the pickguard because all my basses are either blue or have blue on them somewhere. It's my thing.
I changed the bridges because I wanted black ones and they are an upgrade from the originals.
I changed the pickups to Nordstrand Big Singles because I wanted a single-coil sound. I already have a Dingwall with split coils, so I wanted this one to be the other half of my sound. And I think it sounds great now.
Good thing I kept the original hardware since it seems like most people aren't into modifying/personalizing their basses. If I ever sell it (unlikely), I'll put it back to stock.
What do you think?

I like the blacked out look. It looks sharp. Personally not a fan of the pick guard but that’s just me. I like what you’ve done on the whole though.
As for personalizing basses goes. That is fully dependant on the bass. a $1000 combustion.... sure I guess but that depends how much you wanna drop before it just becomes valid to get a higher end one. I’ve always liked the idea of project basses but so far to me they are just $100 basses that turn into a clock or something.
But how do you even consider modifying something like this??
I wouldn't. But for that price, I'd get something made to my specs. I was considering a build through Halo Guitars that would be spec'd out the way I wanted it, but... I don't have the money or frankly the interest at the moment.

Two answers come to mind, and I couldn't decide which one was better, so here are both:
1. Play it so much that you wear out the strings and become forced to change them.
2. Add a custom tort pickguard, of course!
Well, after all, this is TalkBass, home of the Tortoise Pickguard Admirers Club. Although it was a sarcastic response, it is true that a tort pick up would add some color. The amazing thing about that photo is that it is actually a color photo. I'm guessing most people who look at it immediately assume it is a black & white photo.

I think you are right. This was the other one that was posted. Again, it is a color photo. I thought it was photoshopped at first, but apparently it wasn't. You can also tell because the red piece of plastic on the 1/4" jack is shown in its correct color.
And of course your sarcasm was well understood..
But here is a pickguard I have.... still sitting here from a stingray I don’t have anymore that at least colour (shade)matches. Lol.

@xnewyorka maybe you have use for this pickguard to go with something purple.
