Are you the original owner? I don't remember any of the original Combustions having a 2 volume setup? I'd put a 4 way in and leave the rest.

There can't be many of these around. I did find a few online and it looks like they had a separate flip-out style battery box as well. I wasn't necessarily paying too much attention to them when they came out originally but I haven't seen many 4-knob Combustions on the resale market or here.

I've been kind of quietly considering the situation. It may be a bonus that Dingwall is Canadian based and therefore there may be less interest for Gibson to sue internationally. Also, there is a slightly new D-Bird shape, so that might not be by coincidence, or if so, a nice coincidence.
Burning Skies. How did your showing of Dingwalls go at the store? I am formerly of Syracuse.

It was cool. Since impromptu and short notice only a handful of people but it was sort of an excuse to have Ian around for even a brief thing (originally it was planned for my practice room). He's the kind of player that once he starts even noodling, other players stop playing and lose the desire to play in front of.
I wish he were local because I'd be taking weekly lessons from him. We're slating to do an in-store in a few weeks (July 13th I think) on a weekend afternoon that will have some time to promote and there will be a number of Dingwalls in store for purchase since there's a shipment slated from Sheldon. Again, I'll have my stuff there, but if I remember correctly they're expecting something like a dozen instruments to arrive. The staff don't really have deep knowledge about tech and spec, so I'll probably be mostly providing info.
Did Ish used to be under another name in the 80s? How long have you been a member of the community there? We probably know a few of the same people. I played for a punk/hardcore band called The Catatonics a long time ago.It was cool. Ish is relatively new, only the past couple years and he wasn't associated with anyone previously, the owner is relatively young, but has good backing and is a collector nerd at heart. I've been here in town since the late 80's, and have sort of straddled scenes for a while. I was tangentially part of the hardcore scene (lived with DJ Rose (Path of Resistance) Chuck H. (Black SS, etc.), shared rehearsal space with a variety of people from Earth Crisis to Beta Minus, etc. In the 90's I was in a Moon Records NYC band called Too Hectic and have been around doing stuff since.
Almost all of the places from the 80's are gone, unfortunately. Music Center (East Syracuse/eastwood) is still around but that's about it. Bebop Shop, Onondaga Music, Northside, etc. are all gone.
Reporting back on the loose pup-selector knob. Someone said it earlier, but there is a set screw on that knob ONLY. The others are push on. I must have just been looking at the wrong one before. Thanks to all.
SKYPE!! It works quite well for music lessons. I have taken many lessons from Rufus Philpot over skype. I was a bit skeptical at first, but it is a great medium for that sort of thing. Very effective. Rufus is a great instructor and he is always so prepared so I have to qualify the fact that my great experience has much to do with him and his experience using skype. But skype allows you to notate sessions with text that persists so you can go back and remember the assingment and what was discussed, and you can even display written music and still view the instructor. One of these days, when I get through this years long project I'm working on, I would like to resume those lessons. Right now I have zero time.

If people want to get in on the old shape, it's a really good time to buy one if you can find it.
It may be a limited run.

I don’t think Gibson will win this suit any more than they won the PRS lawsuit over their single-cut Les Paul clone that PRS even admitted was intended to be a clone. Gibson went all the way up to the Supreme Court and lost.
The problem is that one cannot use trademark to protect what is otherwise functional. Trademark only protects ornamental features. And when ornamental features are tied into (merged with) functionality, it cannot be protected by trademark or trade dress law. Trademarks can be held forever, and if permitted to protect functional design with merged ornamentation or aesthetic choices, you are protecting forever what patent law says you can only protect for 20 years from date of a patent application. And that is only if such functionality is in fact patentable and not in the public domain.
The only way that Gibson has a chance of prevailing is on some sort of unfair competition claim under then Lanham Act or at common law. Those torts are more like you are trying to pass off your goods as theirs. But Dean has their own logo and are clearly NOT trying to do that.
My sense is that Gibson is hoping to scare off a competitor that either doesn’t want to spend the kind of money it takes to fight them in court, or can’t afford to spend those funds.
If Sheldon has modified the body shape slightly, this is smart insurance because to the extent there is any aspect of the T bird design one can legitimately argue is purely aesthetic or ornamental and not merged with functionality, by not copying the look exactly, you will more than likely avoid any purely ornamental features not merged with functionality.
Several months after getting my Comustion 5 and now it's time for new strings. No complaints about the strings it came with, so I see no need to switch it up just yet. I know they are nickels, but I don't know the gauges. Any help? Thanks.

If they're the original Dingwall Nickel-wrapped Steel, there's only one version available, making that super easy.

That's an EMG circuit. We did install some in a very few basses denoted as AB1.5 but I'm pretty sure we would have included an active passive switch so this looks like it's a retrofit.
I'd forgotten about the early BluEQubes. They got that name because we potted the circuit in blue epoxy using an icecube tray for a mould.
The Dingwall strings are very nice, I like the nickels. You could also try Dingwall strings in stainless for a more aggressive sound.
Other drop in options are Payson strings for fanned fret basses. They will fit your Dingwall perfectly. Payson has a selection of strings in nickel and stainless rounds. Light gauge, reduced core, and flats are also on the menu.
Further afield choices are available at Fret Nation. D’Addario xls in extra long will work. Jason can help you with strings that will fit, and individual selections for mixed sets. I’ve set up longscale Dingwalls with TI jazz flats.
If you don’t see a string set on Fret Nation’s web site, send an email. They are still building out the inventory.
