The yellow-green burst is beautiful. I'd be interested if I had $$ and/or if I was comfortable taking Z's on the road. I'm sure someone will love it.

...In the meantime, I know it's late notice but I'll be 'in store' at Ish Guitars in Syracuse 5-6ish tonight with all my Dingwalls. It was set up for NYC Latin/Jazz pro Ian Stewart to try out a few before ordering/buying but open to anyone who wants. Ish is one of the newer Dingwall dealers these days...so it seemed appropriate.

Anyone who's local/regional is welcome to come and try any of 'em and discuss. I'll also have the fretless DGTC/Piezo Combustion on hand for those curious about such things.

Don't forget to inform guests about the Dingwall dress code!
(No buckles, buttons, zippers, or jewelry while trying basses!!)
I'd bring a size XL pullover sweatshirt to lend out just in case.

Yep. :) I'll be making sure. I honestly don't know if we'll see a bunch of people or not. Either way, it was an excuse for Ian and I to get together again and let him play through stuff and also let others in on it. We've done it before with a handful of guys.

Alternately, folks could just place their bids right in the classified ad. That would be interesting. I wonder if people would be OK doing that. I know I would.

Just a head's up, the mods would not take kindly to that. They are very anti-auction here. Anything without a set price is removed from the classifieds. Personally, I like not having auctions here.

I just saw the F/S thread now, 'bout to scroll through. This should be interesting to follow. I cannot imagine anybody buying it as a lot though, hopefully I get surprised.

I favor the FD-3's wired in series. I have both my Combustions and my rehab'ed Voodoo Prima (all without P/S switching) wired in series.

I did have an AB-1 with the original parallel wiring, and I have a Z-1 that's switchable and find that I remain in series (internally) all the time but do move between the parallel/series on the 4 way depending on need.

If you're more of a 'jazz bass' tone person the parallel setting may be what you're after. If you're happier with a P-bass or modern humbucker tone than series is probably your jam.

Came across this early AB1 today. Maple body, one piece neck, retrofit preamp. Any ideas on what the preamp is?

No ideas on the preamp.

As far as pickups go, I usually rewire both neck and bridge to series. I don’t bother with switches. Or I replace the neck pickup with a P tone, and the bridge gets the simple series rewire.

Funny thing is I really like the rotary selection with both series rewired pickups in parallel, the one click back from solo’d bridge position. Very focused, great for slap.

The solo neck pup is next up, either the P tone or rewired to series. This gives me a great P tone with all the spanky P snarl, or with tone rolled off, P thump.

Both in series is the loudest, widest sound.

Blueqube or hybrid tone circuits are other flavors with the passive circuits.

Maybe aftermarket? I am not sure if the ABI's of that vintage had preamps back then. The first ones I can remember were special runs/individual piece's at Ed Roman's in Las Vegas and maybe Jive Sound, if I remember correctly. The knobs are certainly not original.

I love the natural AB's.

I just received a set of FD3n's from Dingwall I am going to install in my old (SN < 500) Combustion. These pickups are in the old style cases, so should drop in.

Any tips on the wiring?
The original bass (below) has a volume for each pickup and a 2 band EQ. I would not be offended by the idea of swapping to a master volume and making the 2nd volume knob to a pickup selector it that's not too painful.

So you are just wondering whether to go with both in series, both in parallel, or one of each, or would you consider adding series parallel switches to have full flexibility? (That is probably what I would do.)

Just thinking out loud as I write this, if I had two pickups and did not want to install series-parallel switches, I would maybe put the bridge pickup in series, and the neck pickup in parallel.

Preamp definitely aftermarket. The original setup on this era would have been passive w/ BluEQube on the volume push pull. The knobs suggested EMG, but I’ve not seen that purple plastic module before.

The pickups are I believe FD-1’s. Bright and aggressive but parallel not series (remember, up to mid 2000’s FD-3’s were 2 lead parallel coiled.

The other tip-off was that the shells aren’t as smooth as ones from the mid-2000’s FD-3s. A bit of a pebbly surface.

I had a couple early 2000’s AB-1’s. The BluEqube was a switched, passive, tone control that gave you two flavors of the passive tone circuit. One regular tone and another that scooped mids. Either a mini toggle switch or push pull tone knob on the ones I had.

Similar to the hybrid tone circuit that has regular tone for half the turn and a detent, then starts scooping on the rest of the turn.

I haven’t seen the blueqube in recent models.

The BluEQube is out of production. It died when the shop went to giving people the switched parallel/series pickup options, you could get close to that tone without needing the passive mid-cut.
