I was 100% sure there was a set screw on combustion’s but I just checked my D-bird and it’s push on so maybe they have changed them.
I’ve also just realized the new knobs I ordered for my D-bird won’t fit. That’ll teach me to double check!

Like I said; haven't recorded with the amp yet. Won't do anything drastic before that. The specific EMGs I like the sound of are the passive 40 HZ pickups. They have a sweet, warm character with a midrange bump I find pleasing. They don't fit in DW shells, AFAIK, and I dunno if they can work with the series/parallel switches.

Again, I need to try nickel strings and recording my amp and can before I do anything drastic.

As for tone examples, Dan Briggs' tone on Coma Ecliptic and Automata I and II are examples of the tone I'm looking for from the pickups.

Indeed. Though the tone examples from that album differ from the latest two. Much more gritty on Coma Ecliptic and Automata. Their music was also a lot more death metal on Parallax; I prefer their more melodic style on Coma Ecliptic and Automata - though Parallax is a fantastic album on its own.

Worth noting is the fact that Dan plays in G# standard tuning, dropping a regular D'Addario XL Nickel 170-5 set.


Those are better examples of the tone I'm talking about.

Help request: Love my Combustion 5 I got a few months ago, but I noticed when I turn the pickup selector knob, the knob will turn a little bit before catching so to speak. I didn't think much of it at the time and I don't think it has gotten worse, but wondering if over time the post or the knob will be stripped. Should I not worry about? Worry about it and do DIY fix and if so how? Or contact Dingwall and arrange a repair or replacement? Thanks.

It sounds like the mounting nut is slightly loose. Pull off the knob. Then use a socket (just the socket without the wrench) to snug it up. Be careful to not over tighten or you will crush the wood.

The pickup selector knob has a set screw, all others knobs do not.
It was on the bottom so I rotated it so the screw is now visible on the topside for a quick reference marker.

I seriously doubt you will find one in the wild or even new. Why not just buy a used fretted Super and have a qualified luthier pull the frets and convert it to fretless? Not a difficult conversion.

I have a question for you experienced Dingwall owners.
Last week I had the pleasure of playing my first Dingwall and I think I'm sold.
I played an ABZ 5 string and an AB2 5 string, both played and sounded super.
I would like to know what you consider to be the difference in sound between an Afterburner 1 and 2.
I know the body and neck woods will be different but let's assume that the pickups, electronics and fingerboard will be equal.
Wich one would you prefer and why?

They just pull off if there is definitely no set screw.
If it’s sticking then check that it hasn’t been pushed down too far, they can bottom out against the body and feel like it’s sticking.

That's interesting...my hands are small, and I definitely prefer the slimmer necks of the long-scale basses. I had a Super P/J and Super P Fretless, and went back to the long-scale. They were much more comfortable and easier to play. YMMV

I'd think it being a Z that would be to your advantage. Slimmer neck than ABs or a Super.

Is it normal that the 3 pickup configuration on Dingwalls sounds quite alot darker than the one with 2 pickups in parallel? I mean it sounds pretty huge but its hard to dial in presence.
