I don't get the impression that he has files for the older pickups. It was a "maybe someday I'll do this" kind of thing. But perhaps then it would still be for themselves to create pickups to sell. But he likely would rather catch up with new orders.

I contacted Nordstrand about that. If you can get the empty shells from Dingwall, they can fit their pickups into them. I'm currently considering it, myself.
Ah. similar problem, though if they would sell you a couple empty ones maybe less of an issue. What @xnewyorka said.
Seems like they have steered away from Nordstrand dealing with the rounded pickups but in the end easiest to just ask.
I think I want to go big blades or Zen blades, they are told to be balanced and they don't care about string spacing- plus they look sick.

I don't think Nordstrands are potted, so I could fairly easily design and print a case for them. Might take a little trial and error, but should be totally do-able.
Then again, if I want all 3 we are talking $140x3 so $420... maybe later!

Magnetic fields don't care about string spacing.
I once put a EMG P40 in my 5 string not knowing it was for a narrow 6, it's a split bar pickup and my A string was dead, didn't know that there is a P5 that is made for 5 string, swapped it out and made a world of difference.
If it's close enough it will work, but there is comfort in knowing that a single blade will always pick up all the strings even if you change the spacing or put the Pups in another bass.

The other magic most do not talk about is that Dingwalls use smaller Banjo size frets so pushing the string down on the fret feels easier on the hand (takes less pressure) than with the standard medium jumbo frets that are on most basses.
Almost a fretless feel, helping make the neck smoother to play and with less effort than traditional necks.
In my opinion.
We work closely with Nordstrand and supply them with shells when they need them.

Nothing wrong with the stock pups, but I don't get that overdriven sound like I do with big splits when I dig in, works great for finger style.
The stock pups are clean, clear, loud and open, very much like a EMG pup- but I can't get them distort with my fingers... maybe just raise the pups? I have them set 3mm on G (fretted at 24) and adjusted to ear on the B side.

How do the outputs compare? Maybe it's as simple as increasing the input gain on your amp, backing off a little on your technique to compensate then letting her rip when you want to add some grind. Also, with this technique, you can straighten your neck a little which will noticeably lower your action giving you an instant payback for the the lighter technique plus the added bonus of fret growl when you dig in.
That's how I got the action and relief now, low action a hair of relief on the 9th fret, but no buzz when played light or normally, but once dig in I get a good amount of clank.
The output from the B-1005 34" with Big splits is about the same as the Combustion in series, but the B-1005 gets more growl- but it's also a standard scale, with middy woods Wenge/rose neck and bubinga/ash body- so it lends itself to more warmth and growl naturally- but has a meh B string and a rubbery feel on the right hand.
Totally different animal, but when following Geddy, extra grit is good- that guy damn near breaks his fingers off playing.
I'm actually ashamed that at home all I have is a Hartke HD50 and Yorkville 100b, Neither has gain control.
I do have a Boss GT-1B processor I can use, but I like to get the sound from the source first.

Nordstrand says I need to purchase the cases myself- but that's no guarantee it's going to give me the sound I'm looking for, the pickups are just "microphones"
I just think I want the third pickup so I can eventually play some Mudvayne stuff- but I don't know what PUP configurations I can select with the new POT, still want to solo neck, solo bridge, neck and bridge and middle bridge.
One day I want a NG-3 that I can keep drop down tuned and keep the Combustion standard.

You can get those switching combinations from our 3x switch. Mo at Carey's shop can install one for you. He'll just need to order it from us and schedule a time with you.

You should try some different strings over time before going to different pickups. Try Dingwall and Payson strings, maybe Kalium. I've got fairly different sounds from the different options available.
I think I have reduced core Paysons. Still want that 3rd pup regardless.
Stock strings seem to be taught on the D and G string and seem a touch bright.
Don't get me wrong, it sounds amazing, I just want a little darkness/mud in it.
