You Dingwall experts - is the bridge/neck series on the NG2 and the bridge/middle series on the NG3 essentially the same sound or fairly different?

Should be exactly the same. Same type of pickups in the same wiring, just the “neck” pickup in the NG2 gets called “middle” when the third pickup is added.

The only possible wrinkle is that some early NG3s shipped with the D-bird switch, which only offers bridge and middle in parallel.

Mine has the 3x (I think all the newer ones do but someone can correct me if I'm wrong).

most have the 3x switch. It was only a short period of time they were putting the DB switch in the combustion’s.

Here is the easiest way to tell:
1. Plug your bass into an amp and put the pickup selector into position #3.
2. Very lightly tap each of the 3 pickups, ideally with something made of non-stainless steel. Dingwall was kind enough to include a set of wrenches with your bass that would be perfect for this task. (Place a piece of paper on the pickup first to protect it from scratches if you are using a screwdriver or other pointed object.)
3a. If only the middle pickup responds to the light tapping, you have a D-Bird Switch.
3b. If only the two outer pickups respond to the light tapping, you have a 3X Switch.

If you can't tell the difference, either (a) you are tapping too hard, or (b) you have been playing too much without hearing protection. In this case, remove the rear cavity cover and examine the circuit board attached to the pickup selector. It will be printed with either "3X" or "DB".

Some folks might say that another way to tell is by placing the pickup selector in position #4, plugging in to a big amp, and turning it about half way up, then start playing. If you are knocked over by a massive wall of sound unlike anything you have ever heard before, then you have a D-Bird switch.

I caught a view of my strings in low light and realized... I may need new strings.
After two years it still sounds great and is the only bass used, usually in bright light so I did not notice the change.

I'm curious, what percent of the time do you wash your hands with soap and water before playing, on a scale from 0 to 100?

If you are knocked over by a massive wall of sound unlike anything you have ever heard before, then you have a D-Bird switch.

That's precisely why I have the D-Bird switch in all of my Dingwall's! It is a very controllable wall of bass! Even though it's not about overall output, sometimes it is. That PASSIVE D-Bird Standard I had is still the 2nd loudest bass I've ever owned...

I just put the regular scale tapered B set on my Super P5. I had tried them out on the same bass a couple years ago and liked them but didn’t dig the untapered B—this is much better.
