Similar story here. That’s said I’m finding better success with the more simple versions of things.
I’ve never bonded with drive/grit/distortion.... just picked up the microtubes X for a steal after checking many vids on many pedals and I think I found the right one for me.
It even sounds killer on fretless!!!
That works for me, who doesn't like pictures of these sweet basses?!
The X was one I wanted to try as a local store to me was blowing them out cheap. I ended up with a brand new B7k Ultra for $240 USD, kind of steal a deal at that time!
I went from the original Billy pedal to the B3k to a Zoom B3 to a dUg pedal and now have the Helix Stomp. The Stomp is perfect and overkill for what I need and sounds great with my NG2.
That sounds A LOT like me, LOL! I'm just not a fan of "dirty" bass. I shudder to think about how much I've spent on different drive pedals that I've ended up just flipping or shelving. It's been irritating. I love Doug Castro and I think Darkglass is a beacon of bass-centric light in the music biz, but I just haven't ever gelled with any of their gear, and I've tried most of it. The closest I've come was the X7, which I flipped, but it stayed on my board for several months. I've got a DP-3X, which sounded good but, again, just not my thing. I put it back on my current board, but I took it right back off, and it's sitting on a shelf.
Fortunately, I decided to try the Damnation Audio stuff again. I had an MBD-1, thought it was meh, and flipped it. Just got an MBD2 and, for whatever reason, it's like night & day! It's so smooth and so good, I haven't turned it off since I got it. It's supposed to be the same circuit, so I have no idea why it's so much better this time than it was the last time? I've also got a Way Huge Pork & Pickles, but it's nowhere near as good as the MBD2. I do want some modern sounding drive, so I may go either a standard X or go all out and get an X Ultra. Everyone else makes Dingwall basses sound so good thru the modern distortion pedals. I'm gonna get there...
Agreed. I am an HX Stomp fan. That is one piece of gear I'll probably own again.
Honestly, I'd point you in the direction of the HX Stomp. It's small, powerful, and it'll probably still be less expensive than an old Fractal. Seriously though, the Stomp is fantastic! I had it and a Kemper at the same time, and I ended up going with the Stomp. It was just easier, for me, to dial in a massive tone compared to the Kemper.
After trying all the Darkglass dirt pedals I landed on the X7 as my happy place - though I run it with the high gain almost all the way down! It's got the Darkglass flavor, and it does an amazing job of tightening up my low end in a really articulate way.
For more old school voiced gain, I like the Sansamp YYZ.
I too am onboard with the digital revolution, but didn't used to be till the Kemper. I understand the hesitancy, but man I love it that we are getting these amazing products pushing the boundaries of what is known and what can be done with tone. So much of the music industry is 70 years behind tech, so I love the innovators. Guess that's why I just moved over to Dingwall, with plans of replacing my jazz basses with Super Js in the future!Another Helix fan here, as well. I still have a Noble pre on my list, but it almost seems pointless - I'm pretty happy now with where a lot of my presets are dialled in to, and I have much more flexibility available to me as a result.
The thing I love about the Noble is the simplicity. Plug in, two knobs for your EQ, sounds amazing just about on any setting.
But yeah, you sound like me. I entertain thoughts of moving my LT on, but aside from synths, and a couple of drive sounds I wish I had (think Alpha-Omega) I honestly have no complaints.
I honestly don't think it'd be that much different - the difference would be in how quickly you could dial in a sound you're happy with.
I had a Noble for about a month. Again, I only sold it because I was a much more incorrigible gear ho then than I am now, sorta'. It was outstanding! If I had had my Dingwalls when I had the Noble, I probably would've kept the Noble. It's everything everyone says it is.
Even with all the awesome digital gear that's here and coming, Killer tube pre's like The Noble and the Jule Monique will always have a place.

I love my Noble
The feel/response when playing through it is pretty impressive and it makes the bass sit incredibly well together with kick drumsseriously. I listened to a few key videos. I can’t remember which but if you want I can try and dig them up. The the X actually wowed me more then the X7.
I’m usually one for bells and whistles..... you may have guess that by now but the X
just seemed to have a perfect simplicity to it. I want a direct out but again the X still won out and I’m so glad it did.
I could go on a lot more on how it even makes the fretless sound freaking incredible but this will get lengthy.
I like clean articulate piano tones inherently. Distorted just doesn’t float my boat.
This pedal works.
