We do both for different reasons. Stains enhance the grain, shaders tend to compress the contrast in the grain. On tops, we'll often use a combination of the two to get the best effect. On necks, we don't regularly use figured wood so a stain isn't necessarily the best choice. Especially since stains are very hard to touch up if sanded or worn through.

So would something like this one be
Green stain and purple spray?

This is one seriously cool bass. I've told myself that someday I will own a Canadian Dingwall. This one is a full on inspiration. I would go 5 string but I love the colors and the maple board.

Semple's stuff is really good. I used his GitD powder before I Luminlayed stuff and he's got some serious ultra-blacks too. This stuff looks good, and they're probably already working on Mirror 2.0

thanks Bones. I do enjoy the crap out of it. It’s definitely a dream bass. One of many dreams. Many dreams of many people. Soooo many different options these days can sure make it a challenge to say any “one” is “THE ONE”.

If I had only 1 it would be this one but I sure would miss the others


I am genuinely curious though how the coloration is applied. Some are pretty easily identifiable but finishes like this I am not confident with my lack of info to know how it is applied

I'm guessing that it is stain, either applied by hand with a rag, or sprayed on and then hand rubbed with a rag, light colors first, then darker colors last.
