I don't know that Sheldon has ever painted the back of the neck of any of his instruments. Oil, wax, or a thin coat of poly are all that I have heard of or seen used to protect them from moisture.

If given my druthers, I'd love to have a wenge neck with a nicely figured ziricote board, with matching wood speedo bars.

That's a beautiful bass, I'm sad that it has to sell and that one of the strings fell off of it.
Hrm, this Z picture from the gallery has a neck that looks stained, versus the green AB in the classifieds that looks painted
I think that one is painted. Like @AB Nate said - like one of the transparent colors. Dark on edges, transparent in the middle.
Mine sure looks painted, it's solid uniform black, no visible trace of the wood underneath unlike that Z.
The alternative would have been solid pale maple (I've never seen a tainted maple AB neck, could be wrong of course) so it's perfectly ok to me, it does the job.
But yeah if we are just talking about optics bird's eye (or grilled, or whatever it's called) would be a step up, for sure.
Or tainted like my spector, a beautiful blueish/gray which almost looks more like rock than wood.

The 'options' in the afterburner series on their website says "Satin Blacked out Neck shaft, Head and Heel." - satin i thought usually meant paint 'finish', not stain...but what do i know 
LOVE that black Z above...maybe they are using new paint/stain to make black, black and not purple black? I sure hope so. Not that there is anything wrong with the other - but when someone orders black, they could be a bit butthurt to see purple hues.
When i ordered mine years ago, i requested trans black burst no purple hues - and then we got the call that it can't be guaranteed - so i went red black burst ---no regrets.
Did anyone see that green one on IG with the green block inlays? I need to digest that a bit.

If you're speaking of the SJ that was supposed to be the color of the aurora borealis, yes. It's nice, but I'm just not into green basses, myself.

I love the sap coloring on fretboards, but I also don't like block inlays. And weird colors from the 60s like Fiesta Red. Can't do it.
We've evolved our neck finishing over the years as finish chemistry has changed. Currently we use a sprayed urethane that's been formulated for guitars. The quality of oil finishes started going downhill in the early 2000's due to environmental regulations. I'm not saying that there isn't an oil available that is suitable for necks. We just were no longer happy with the dozen or so brands we tested.
The color and finish are sprayed on this bass. Our finisher Paul did a blackburst finish. The burst pattern along the lines of Jazz guitars of the 50's.

It's always been my experience that matte and satin finishes were very similar. Sometimes two names for the same thing. It's great that Dingwall offers the "blacked out" neck option. We all have our preferences. Whatever gets you playing and happy while doing it is all that really matters, right?
do you guys do any staining or is it all spray?
I’m under the assumption that currently everything is sprayed. At least it appears that way
We have the same distaste. Many players love Fiesta Red, but I am not one of their number.

I got a fiesta red Fbass...from Santa...a couple years ago....She, i mean Santa, heard me raving about the bass - then i found it in my stocking. So, ya SUPER cool --- i wasn't keen on the colour either - but since then, i had George personally custom make me a flamed maple neck/FB and added a custom tort pickguard and all black hardware (instead of the chrome it came with)....Santa wasn't overly thrilled with my decision making abilities, i slept in the doghouse a couple days but well worth it. My doghouse is situated also in my music room..with many basses, amps, cabs , beer fridge etc etc - so, i managed fine.
It still is NOT my fav colour - but is much more tolerable this way.
