Dingwall Owners Club

I prefer the active tone on my NG-2 to the passive. There is a noticeable difference to my ear. I'll admit that I'm an 'active guy'. I prefer a brighter tonal palette than most and always run with the preamp on. I run my Glock two-band preamps flat, but I actually use the DGTC for tone shaping, especially to cut bass, which opens up the tone very nicely. I find all three eq points useful.

The TC brings stuff to the table. Of all the preamps I have, it is the one most recognizable. After having recorded maybe 150 or so shows, it specifically adds a texture to the output...some kind of very slight edge that the rest of the Dingwall preamps don't have. It really is a big part of the character of the NGs. Lacking the series bridge/neck on the NG3 with the 3X switch, I push the lows a bit to make up for that lack of emphasis in the deeper lows. And I do jockey the Low-mid/High-mid for different amounts of clarity or texture in that 'string-sound/treble range. I actually decided pretty quickly it would be beneficial to my fretless too. The OBP's are a little more polite, but they're warmer and feel a bit more compressed.

I'm one who actually does like active preamps, but I'm happy to have a passive Super-P...it just feels right, though I would guess it does have some down-sides were I on stage regularly again.

It's not really about volume. In fact, Dingwall preamps are set to be the same level whether active or passive. Each preamp sounds different, even flat, and then having EQ available at the bass can be a real bonus, when you're on stage and don't want to visit your amp every time you want to change the EQ.

When I turn on the preamp, the volume gets considerably louder than when playing in passive mode, so much that you have to turn it down. I did not notice any tone change whatsoever between passive and active, when all 3 tone knobs were set flat for the active use, but I would not have expected to, so I believe that was correct. I hear what your saying about being on stage and having the controls available right on the bass rather than go over to the amp, but, somehow I need to actually get on a stage to experience that...and that would require finding people to play with. I'm working on that part. My amp is within arms reach of where I sit and practice now, so I have my Source Audio EQ pedal GUI open on the computer and whip up a nice EQ curve and save as a preset. Then one day, when I figure out where the stage is, I will have it all ready in my pedal and I can pull all the tone pots out of my Dingwall and plug the holes..lol..

Huh. I had an EMG equipped Dingwall, and I don't remember the Preamp not being Unity gain like my Aguilar and my DGTCs, though that doesn't necessarily mean they can't be.

Without drilling any new holes, and I think you want to keep your active circuit intact, you could probably get a DoublePoleDoubleThrow switch to replace the active/passive switch, so that when you switch to active it would then engage the battery as well, but your have to remember to turn it off when not using it.

Powering up pre-amps causes a spike in the output - it's that loud popping sound when you plug in an active bass. Not something you want to happen during a performance. Active basses have standardized using the stereo jack to control the power to the pre-amp to prevent this from happening. If you want to use the ring for signal, I recommend removing/disconnecting the pre-amp entirely.

Would there be any harm in removing the wire from the ring part of the jack, while also putting the preamp into passive mode and disconnecting the battery (thus leaving everything else intact, including the wire connected to the tip part of the jack)? If I mess around with this I'd like to make it as simple as possible to undo any changes I make.

Well what ever then......

I knew it was your colour at least. Lol

I really do appreciate you bringing that to my attention. You are absolutely right that is my color. Don’t get me wrong, I’d play it, it if I spec’d it myself...

I watched the Dingwall video of the main paint on this one. Didn’t think it would become available!

As long as whoever is doing the unsoldering and soldering has experience with guitar circuits, this will work out fine.

I love metallic finishes! I watched that whole paint video. The guy is really good!

Is there a new contour line on the Super, along the lower bout and top, or is that a reflection?

Edit, watched the painting video again, it’s a reflection. Man, do I want to set up a spray booth! I’ve got the itch to play with metallic finishes. (Not on my Dingwalls, that are safe). A bass boat glitter, large flake, green and gold hydrofoil set up would be pretty badass in the sunshine.

I love how those layers went on.

I don’t have Instagram, does it have a matching headstock and how much? Thanks
No matching headstock and no price but it'll be getting on for 4 grand or so in USD.
