Thanks a lot for the info on the Droc/Dbirds guys. It seems apparent I should stay with the shape I know and love.

One other thing I saw recently on a sale ad for a NG3 mentioned something like "with the new thinner neck". Did Dingwall recently change the neck carve on some basses and does anyone know the dimensions? I would love it if the Combustion series got thinner necks.

I was able to try one, and the body shape wasn’t awkward at all. Dingwall fixed a lot of the issues which Gibson had with the body shape. I just purchased one yesterday and should be getting it this week. I’ve played damn near very body shape on a bass you can think of. IMHO body shape has little to do with my basses. Sound did. They being said I’ve got a Gibson Tbird and sitting down and recording with it was more comfortable than my Fender basses were.

Welcome to the club this is a great community to be in, I'd say! It's not always bright and sunshiney, but overall it's a great place to learn. Lots of helpful folks around here.

no. I can confidently say.... WITHOUT fact there is not a new thinner neck. I’ve played/had a V1 and a v3 that perceptively had thinner necks then a few newer ngs/combustion’s. the neck spec hasn’t changed from as far as I know other then my perception/or reality from individual bass to bass

Welcome to the club! What kind of flavor of Dingwall did you get? Or are you just going to tease us until it arrives?

As a beginner with no real experience on a fanned fret bass I only ever considered the Combustion line from a financial standpoint. Taking lessons with a squier classic vibe 4 string and briefly considered getting a five string to grow into, but chose to upgrade the four since that is what I will be playing every day right now. I was really hung up on the standard versus the NG and I chose to go with the standard. Much of what I read indicated that while both are amazing the NG is intended to be a bit more aggressive sounding due to the darkglass pre while the combustion can blend in and do pretty much anything. (Apologies for this over simplification, I saw many amazing players use the NG in a non aggressive setting, like Stefan Lessard of Dave Matthew’s Band). Thinking purely as a beginner with no real sound or style of my own I was drawn to the combustion standard as a vehicle to discover my own sound and do a little bit of everything. I am however quite sure that I could not have gone wrong with either choice........

With that honestly, the preamps are just icing. I’ve had some tasty cakes before that were icing free. The passive tones from a Dingwall are fantastic all on their own. I love my pre amps but honestly find for recording I’m preferring sending a passive signal. It just sounds sooo good.

A suggestion if you carry down this road, the older Ab1s and ABZs can be available for a great bargain and that could put a Canadian build in your hands that might tonally be right up your alley.

A Blasius bass with custom Delano pick ups designed for fanned fret. I haven’t personally experience Delano pups but the vids I’ve seen and the reviews from some friends lean toward them being pretty bad ass units.

The 3x setup can get in the ballpark of the MM sound, definitely close enough for me. But that big Delano bucker seems more authentic, should someone want that.

I wonder if they’d do a multicoil in that housing...

Actually the necks did change around 2014 - so "new" is relative.

I have a slight memory of an early video of Nolly talking about the NG-2 where he said the fretboard roll off was changed a bit for the model. I don’t know how much I trust that memory, though.

I'll second that. I mostly just play at home and write music, and the NG3 is typically in passive mode. I do tend to use it for heavy music vs my older Combustion, but it's a super versatile instrument. I wish I had either of them when I was in a pop band or a cover band!
