Lots of new year, new gear pre spring cleaning going on it seems like.
I’ve been having a few thoughts myself. Not for new stuff mind you, just to minimize my options.

I can’t get over how good it feels to play my D-Roc. I’d been working on the opening to Tool’s 46 & 2, with my Ibanez BTB 4-string (a bass that I have always found to play very well), and had all the pieces pretty well down, by themselves, but kept on tripping up on putting it all together.

I noticed my battery dying, so I just grabbed my D-Roc, and within a couple playthroughs, I got through it all near perfectly. I think it’s just so comfortable that it gets my brain out of the way of interfering with itself.

Best bass purchase I’ve ever made. Every time I play it, I get more hooked on Dingwall.

I’m trying to learn a few things on recording. It seems in this day and age it’s important for auditioning or selling gear or showcasing it but either way, It’s almost a required skill these days. I’m long over due to invest some time into it.

Thanks to @Iv@N And his videos, the recording covers one in particular, I’ve taken a couple baby steps.

it’s not good mind you but in an early experiment I’m working on I wanted to compare some P basses and other basses that could get pretty close to that vibe.

I stumbled on an easy song that I probably should have learned 20 years ago and recorded some basses to it.

I figured just for fun I’d do a mash up of the basses mixed throughout the song.

With that I have also been curious to hear them back to back. Rough as guts and no filters other then the signal chain which is:

Bass
> DG Hyperluminal compressor
> Mesa WD800
> Steinberg UR 22 mkII interface
> Cubase elements

the Basses used:
-Dingwall SJP PJ bridge/neck series new strings
-Dingwall SJP. P only same bass above
-MTD CRB5 2 yr old strings at least
-Dingwall Super P. 8 month old strings.
-Dingwall Z3 6 Neck pick up only 10 month old strings
-Dingwall SJ neck pick up only. Not sure the age of these strings and they are not Dingwall strings.
-Fender P. Strings might be from 93!!!! I don’t know the bass ever received any love.... ever. I did boil them though a couple months back but thats it.

I’ve recorded them in a random order and then did a quick snippet of each bass in that same order at the end of the song.

I thought maybe it’d be fun for those interested to try and guess which one is which.
The changes go as such:

1.0-34 sec
2.34-50 sec
3.50-1:33 min
4.1:33-2:08 min
5.2:08-2:44 min
6.2:44-3:46 min
7.3:46-4:18 min

I know the bass is hot and the recording is hack but it’s just an experiment on a learning curve so struggle along with me. Lol.

I figured due to the amount of dingwall content it may be fair to post it here. Perhaps I can get better at this and add video if my old PC can keep up.

Oh and all basses were recorded passive and at neutral setting (5). Not where I’d normally set them but for consistency it’s what I did.

As a new Dingwall owner I totally understand what you mean. My other basses feel super weird now. My NG3 neck feels more like home so to speak. It's just so easy to get around.

I used to have some very nice mono-scale basses, but all found other homes along my Dingwall journey. It's been years since I've fingered one...

I think I’ll go back later and at least try to figure out the non-Dingwalls. First time listening, though, I’d say it sounds pretty good. The bass was clear and easy to pick out of the mix, without being OVER noticeable, to the detriment of the rest of the music or song as a whole.

Thanks man, I really didn’t put anytime into post production. Just track A and track B bring the song down a tad and go. I’ll work on better recordings with fresh strings, preferred EQing on the bass and better balancing. Eventually onto mastering perhaps. I’m just curious if anyone’s got some guesses. I think 1 in particular is a pretty dead give away Compared to the rest.
