Yep, the last place I would expect to find a Dingwall. The 58th store usually has a few but east Calgary is pretty slim pickings. This one apperently was ordered, but just before delivery the customer decided they wanted a Canadian model so they traded it in as soon as they picked it up, so it is brand new, but priced as used. Or so the salesman told me hahaha.

Yeah Darryl is my go to guy at l&m. Trying to order bass parts from people who don't know what they're talking about can be a struggle.

Lots of history at the east store and I think that keeps lots of “vintage” loyalty there.
Side note: if your ever looking at ordering some Payson strings HMU. a couple of us will do a bulk order to save on shipping.
Ranjit is definitely who I go through down there, known him for a long time. I'll keep that in mind, will probably be looking for strings in the near future just to have some extras on hand.
How do you guys find the Payson strings? I was looking at them but the shipping to Canada was pretty rough. I just ended up getting some dingwall 6 string sets since they didn't have the 5 string sets in stock which also wasn't ideal haha.
I kill strings pretty hard though so I needed something. My current set is getting pretty dull.

The Reduced core Paysons are class favourites. They get a warm reception by most. I have them on one 6 string and I Love the Stainless steels on my other which is set to be an aggressive bass. That said, I like my Payson SS to break in for a couple days before they are in the sweet spot.
Nothing against the Dingwall strings at all I would use them in a heartbeat if Payson didn’t exist but I find the Payson strings just offer a flavour that works well for me.

I really liked the Payson reduced core nickels, and the medium lights. The flats are cool. I just received a couple custom sets that Payson was kind enough to put together for me. I'm looking forward to the next couple string changes.
The cross border shipping would give me pause. Back when there were few choices, I would order a box from Dingwall and ad in some other stuff to justify the shipping. Now we can get Dingwall strings from FretNation with free shipping.
I'm assuming the shipping in Canada for Dingwall strings is minimal. I like the Dingwall strings as well, but they are too heavy for my tastes these days. I use the A-C strings for my four string tuned E-G. My all time favorite set up on the AB-1 was E-C with TI jazz flats.
Since you ordered the six string sets, you might play around with the E-C thing. I liked that set up more than the low B.
I've had success with other strings as well, Infeld Superalloy, TI jazz flats (Jason at FretNation can set you up).

I think the mixture of string age on these basses really modifies what you may think is what
1, 4, 6 & 7 are the ones I like best, I'd be happy with any of those sounds so looking forward to the reveal.
#4 is probably just about closest to how my SPJ (P solo) sounds, but I play that one with a pick and roll off some highs to make it a bit less snappy with newer strings.
Yeah the Dingwall sets are the most economical option in Canada. It's 35 CDN for a pack of strings and shipping is 17 CDN to my location (I'm pretty far from the Dingwall factory) . Not amazing but it's better than paying USD. The exchange rate is pretty crap right now. I bought 2 packs of strings and the allen key set to adjust my bass to make the shipping worth it. It was still 17 CDN for that.
As for doing E-C I'd be curious to try it if I had another Dingwall. My NG3 has become my #1 bass for my metal band though so a low B is going to be more useful to me than a high C in that band.

I do too. Normally the p pickups are rolled away from center for my tastes as well.

In the meantime, give the ones you have a soak in denatured alcohol (not rubbing alcohol which has water). A quick overnight soak, wipe 'em off and let the alcohol evaporate off the strings then put them back on. They'll be about 90% of the new feel.
I buy in bulk from Dingwall for strings I prefer Sheldon's nickel/steel on my fretted basses. When I did some shopping around, I found that when I bought between 5-10 sets at a time with the shipping cost and exchange rate it was the same or less than other retail options and I'd rather have more of my $$$ go to the HQ in Saskatoon.
I have a set of Payson flats on the fretless, which has been something to get used to. They're much quieter and 'deader' and higher tension but you can just do stuff with flats that you can't with rounds.
