Dingwall Owners Club

So I've had my modded Combustion back for a while. Nothing too crazy with Nordstrand FD3s and a Darkglass pre but my enjoyment of it has really improved.

It's probably just my imagination but the front pickup alone sounds so much better and more P like than I remember. Been using this tone as an excuse to improve my pick chops on bass as I'm usually a fingers and slap guy. The Darkglass pre is awesome for the hard rock and heavy stuff I like to play and I prefer it over the emg for the bass control alone.

All this being said, I am taking issue with part of the finish. Overall it's great but one part isn't sitting right with me. I feel silly to nitpick but I've tried to push it out of my mind ever since I got it back and pretend that it didn't bother me. I'm going to send the body back, and I absolutely hate that I have to but I've already sunk this much dough into it, I might as well get exactly what I want.

So I'll be without it again for a while in a few months and that sucks but atleast I know I will have a bass that is perfect for me when I get it back.

This might be old news to a lot of you, but when I bought my NG3 last week, one thing I never thought of was the placement of the output jack. I’ve used right angle cables for as long as I can remember and I just don’t feel comfortable using a straight cable at this point. I quickly discovered that my current cables wouldn’t work with the NG3. They would plug in, but any movement and they would pop out. A quick search and I found a lot of discussion on the same issue. Even after reading up on it, I still wasn’t sure what the solution was. I took a chance ordering a George L right angle cable and it works perfectly. It can move freely without hitting the body and it stays put.

good to know. We have definitely gone through this convo multiple times.

I’m in the angled jack at the bass camp as well and in all honesty it’s one of the reasons I don’t ever end up keeping a combustion around.

Petty perhaps but it just frustrates me to know end. Most heads are very difficult to put a right angle jack into making it not ideal to just flip a cable around either.

Hello :)

I'm thinking of having a custom bass made with Dingwall pickups in it (most likely FD3n).
Made some research, and found that they sell "bridge" and "neck" pickups, but no specific "middle" pickup.

According to Sheldon D., neck and bridge pickups really are the same, just reversed to work together nicely :
FD3N on sale on an uk site

So I'm wondering how to choose that middle pickup...
The idea is to have a switch to access several different pickup configurations (neck + middle in parallel, middle + bridge in parallel, neck + bridge in parallel, middle + bridge in series with neck in parallel, etc etc), would that choice of pickup break some of those combinations (because of phase issues, or something else that I'm not aware of) ?

I'm thinking that any pickup will work, given that the wiring is done properly (phase inversions in certain configurations ?), but would appreciate some input on this.

I'm asking here because maybe some of you added a 3rd middle pickup into their 2 pickup Dingwall ! I'll probably ask the same question over to the Pickups & Electronics subforum.

Thank you :)

I don't think you have to worry about this. The difference is that the middle pickup is made with the magnetic poles in the other direction, it's not going to be a phase related issue.

May I humbly suggest to get the same one as me? :)

You’d be best to ask dingwall direct. They sell kits for converting 2X basses into 3x basses. I don’t recall offhand what the pick up was as I did have it done once and I’m sure they sell a 3 pick up set complete.
An email to sales@dingwallguitars would help clarify what’s available for sale.

as for pick up selections, looking at the existing options on the 2 switches(dbird and 3x) would be a good place to start. Dingwall has already done the research for you to know what is the best of the best options.

I don’t think the M/N option has been very well received by those who have tried it. I have not.

I am curious about your 3x setting and have not heard anyone else try that one but I’d suspect it’s “too much” as dingwall hasn’t utilized it.

Food for thought but these are all pretty
Much winning options below.

Are you having a Dingwall bass made or some other builder? Also will it be multi scale?
If the later I doubt they’ll sell you the pickups so you’ll have to try Nordstrnd or similar.
If your build is not multi scale you want to look at different pickups anyway.

Wow quick answers, you guys are really helpful, much appreciated :)

@BurningSkies so you're saying going something like Neck / Bridge / Neck to have the middle pickup be inverted with the other 2 ?

@archisland watching your video right now, great work ! So you're basically having the Z series switching possibilities (each PU has a series / parallel switch), but with the D-roc rotary switch ? Great stuff, crazy versatility ! I think however I'll start off with a stock pickup, before considering having one (or more ?) made custom :)

@AB Nate I've been geeking out over those pickup combinations for a few days now, I practically know them by heart ! However there are things that I'd like to do that are not currently possible, like a variable blend when 2 pickups are in parallel with each other for instance. I came up with an idea that involves a 9 positions switch, soooo I'll probably have to downscale a bit :roflmao: The 3x settings I'm talking about is something that I'm really curious about. It's similar to D-roc's 4th setting in a sense, and I'd love to have that option, just to try it. Maybe it's great, maybe it's not ! Who knows ? :) All the pickup configurations that I'm looking for are not covered by the current switching possibilities (neck / middle / bridge soloed, each pair of pickups in either series or parallel with a blend, and even the crazy 3 pickup combinations that could be done), and I'm very curious to hear how all of those can sound like.
However I'll take your advice and ask them directly, you're right about that !

@Waltsdog that will be a multiscale of course, made by some other builder.
To expand a bit, I wanted to have certain options that Dingwall does not offer at the moment AFAIK (headless, more pickup configurations, zero fret, different preamps, etc).
The original pickups can be purchased independently :) Which is great, I've only been hearing good stuff about those !

I feel that I'll have to make a dedicated thread, not trying to derail this one

I believe you'll want the reversed polarity pickup in the middle...

no derailment here man. This is dingwall content and if your exploring unexplored territory I’m sure we’ll all like to hear about your findings!
If you do get all the options your thinking hopefully we will get to hear some audio or video?

this guy was sure tempting to talk to about a headless model.

Or Padalka looks like he does amazing work!

curious to see who you go with as well.

Love it :woot: With the demand driving the supply, if more and more people are requesting headless, we'll get it eventually !
I'll make sure to post a link when I've created that dedicated thread, to have you guys' opinions  And if the project is ever started and completed, pictures and recordings, of course !

Another option is reverse the middle and bridge pickup wiring. I did, I have neck/neck-middle/middle-bridge/middle.
This is equivalent to inverting the direction of the coil (CW => CCW), right ? I definitely have to learn more on this subject, so that I know what I want, and what can be done.

Found this picture that's easy to understand though !

You guys are making me wish I had a 3x, no fair haha. If I bought another now I think I'd get a 6 string 3x but bridge and middle in series is a must have for me. I'm not sure if its my imagination but the FD3s sound just a hair more ballsy than the 3ns, I'd be curious to try the FDVs or the true P tone but I'm not sure if they would suite me.

I ended up getting the Ibanez EHB to curb my interest in headless. It’s a great bass but I have no doubt when the dingwall model comes out it will be replaced.
It is the understanding dingwall is working on an option.
