New or used? Didn't think their pricing was that close... though with recent price increases, maybe so.
You're right, their not that close. That wasn't a good generalization. For me though if I'm spending over 4k on a custom bass the difference between that and 7k (if that's what a basic Z costs these days - maybe it's higher) isn't as significant as getting the right instrument to have for the rest of your playing days.

Really though I feel silly in a way wanting a super because there is literally nothing I can't do with my Z the way I have it set up. It's perfect. I can cop a killer p bass with either the neck or middle pickups, a MM or MM on steroids, a jazz tone with N-B parallel, etc. But hey, we're all here because common sense is overruled by lust :D

I get ya,

you know what I got and I ridiculously can help myself in buying a used combustion.... honestly the pick guard caught my attention. Can it out perform my Canadian builds in any way? Lol. Nope.

but it’s a good looking minty relic and it came with 2 new sets of kalliums which is a bonus as trying them is a first.

Honestly if you want diversity from a Z I’d get a straight up P bass. It’s the most opposite thing you’ll find and sounds soooo tasty.
That fiesta red one in the classifieds is tempting. If I didn’t have a P I’d be pushing for it’s “3 months ago price” and stripping that hideous paint(so ya got my opinion on that too. Hehe) for a new finish.

Dang Dirk! You got A full blown Case of DAS
I have a full blown case of "what the hell were you thinking".
But it's so pretty. And... And ... Wow it's pretty...

I've never played a six string. And realistically I have no clue how to play a five string, either, so there's that...
I do know that i spent easily twice the amount practicing my bass since I got the Z1, so maybe in ten years I'll know what I'm doing?

I started with a 4 string Squier. And couldn't play it. I think it was very poorly set up, too, but this was April last year, the full lockdown in Oregon, so I couldn't get it set up, either...
And I hadn't found this forum, yet, to ask for help...

Ok, i know what inversions are (bass noob, but a decade of music theory as a kid).
But can you elaborate on what you are suggesting? I do have an online bass instructor so I can make suggestions what I want to do next...

tapping:
learn how to tap some arpeggios. It seems hard, or it did for me, when you first start but it really becomes a lot of fun ones you have a few licks and tricks down.

inversions:
Just take your root,3rd,5th and start working a chord starting with a different root of the 3.

Like this?
That does look like a lot of fun. Never tried it.

And yeah, inversions I practice all the time. Two octave scales in all the modes, ladders, intervals. diatonic seven chords and their inversions... (note that I say I practice those, not that I'm necessarily proficient in them).

But yeah, tapping... more things I don't know how to do!

One of fav players Fernando Molinari does some really great tapping throughout his library. I wanted to link the song tropical rain but.... he doesn’t do much at all in it so here is one that is a nice little melody

and another fav is Jared smith.(his media may pop up more in this forum in the future;))

Wow, that's beautiful. And I do notice both of them tapping on 6 strings. And I also am now sitting with my bass on my lap and realize that while I can make this sound ok-ish on G and D string and mostly on the A, it does sound "off" on E and B...
Way cool

Tropical Rain is so much fun to listen to! Also +1 for Jared Smith, I'm not as into the whole tech death thing these days but man some of that stuff really will build your chops. Some of the best endurance practice and learning to be flexible with changing techniques on a dime. But at the price of subtlety and dynamics at times.

As for Kalium strings, let us know how you feel about them. Me personally, I love their hybrid set and they were an old favorite of mine when I was more into the world of odd tunings. I've sort of come back but now I'm just looking for balanced tension in more normal tunings like drop D and A. I'll have to spec a set for half step down soon.

Also this is for you Nate

I think it’s the hybrid set I just strung up on the combustion.
Initial reaction was “ewwww”! But I’m warming up to them or they are just warming up themselves.I know by now I’ve got to give string a few days to decant lol. I’m also not used to a .136 B it’s a small cable for sure.
That combined with really exploring the eq of the old (new to me)combustion with headphones on didn’t leave me with anything Definitive last night.

Nice Playing!! the Depth of some peoples Infinite writing abilities is almost hard to Fathom.....:p

pretend it’s a 5 string but with an extra string. ;) No need for it to be any more than that. It will probably take a bit to get used to the neck width and how that changes your hand position, and how to keep those strings calm and muted.

Right now I’ve been rotating as I work on things... fretted 5 (Super P short scale), fretless 5 (Combustion 34-37”) and fretless 6 (parallel fret 35”).

My used AB2 arrived safe and sound yesterday. What everyone has said about the Dingwall low B being the best in the business are sure right. Sounds incredible! It came in a hardshell case, with the Dingwall wrenches and two new sets of Dingwall strings. Score!

I am having an issue with fret buzz. I’ve checked the neck relief using the method described in the Dingwall video and made a small adjustment to the truss rod so a business card fits comfortably under the B at the 7th fret (with capos). Unfortunately, even after doing this and raising the action, I’m still getting a lot of buzz. The strange thing is it’s mostly buzzing on the E, A, and D strings. Also, the action is now quite high. Thoughts?
