To be honest, I was surprised to see the Super Fatties as an option on the info card accompanied by the bass. I don’t remember ever seeing an ABZ from this era with Super Fatties.

It could have been a selection for other basses as I think those early cards had checkboxes for the bass type as well. Early Super Fatties are like the bridge pickup here. Modern ones are rounded shell versions.

Now that I think of it, I do remember someone had posted clips of the different pickups in square shells on an NG-2. Found them. From Japan. I get the impression this didn't go anywhere (or not far anyway), but it implies that there was at least one set. Was this just prior to rounded pickups? I'm thinking so, because of the Super Fatty 2, but I'd have to compare release dates.

I don't know if this helps, but you can get the saddles separately. Black ones are $12 from hipshot. BBG might have them cheaper, I didnt check. Maybe someone has an old A style bridge you can harvest the saddles from?

You made me look at the neck specs/options for the AB-I. No mention of carbon fibre reinforcement, just the truss rod glued in under 1,000 pounds of pressure into the five-ply maple neck. IME, this is a big part of what makes Dingwalls so lively and 'resonant'.

i assume fdv and fd-3n are the same basic design… but with alnoco vs neodynium magnets. Is this a correct assumption? And what does fd3 have?

from an unrelated source on pickup magnets:

Neo: They produce a very wide frequency range and they have an aggressive, clear high end, scooped midrange, and tight bass. Reportedly, Neodynium pickups produce higher highs, lower lows, and generally more explosive power than any other pickup material.

alnico v:
  • Alnico V is the strongest of the three; more powerful in tone and response. The most powerful and aggressive of the alnico magnets. It's got a very prominent upper midrange bite that is great for pushing your amp and cutting through a mix. Its greater output makes it a good choice for bridge pickups, over which there is usually a smaller amount of string vibration. Good for an aggressive, punchy sound.

the website is a bit out of date. The ng models got cf reinforced necks last year i believe (could have been earlier but i contacted dingwall to confirm that my 2021 ng had them). Not sure if the truss rod design in the ab1 negates the need for it. For some reason i feel that i read that the ab’s got the cf sooner… but no one ever quote me on that. Very sus info coming from my vague memories scanning possibly inaccurate forums.
