Dear Club, has anyone tried Spector mutiscale string sets on your Dingwall basses?

I have zero experience with Spectors but yes - 37” B doesn’t equal tough to manage when playing low notes. The longest reach that I ever experienced was a 34” Alembic Series 1 4 string (the one with the pointed bottom). Not much top horn, and the bridge is 3 inches from the edge of the body. I do have great things to say about Alembic but the weight/ergonomics didn’t work for my (more) injured back at the time.

Bummer...but glad it's not just me. I'll have to try SITs, I had a set I liked on my 7 a long time ago...

Not just you, I had a set and hated them. Lasted one practice and had to come off. I just stick with Dingwall nickels mostly, although I am waiting on a set of TI rounds to try on my D-Roc.

Anyone else bummed with the Dunlop Super Brights on their Dingwall, DRoc specifically?

The inharmonicity of the low string above the 9-10th fret, and even the second string is really striking...brand new strings, properly installed, not twisted or unraveling...sound like ass. I'm a huge super bright fan on my ATKs, so I'm very surprised. Only thing I can think of is the tapered core, which along with the length is unique to the Dingwall compatible set. Brand new of Fretnation.

I'm running a 130 set, skipping the E and tuned AGCF or CGCF to play a lot of Mastodon and Elder.

I also love Super Brights on my Fender basses, but haven't ever tried them on my Super P5.
But I mostly replied to say that I've been on a huge Elder kick recently. Love that band.

Like you, I'm a huge Super Bright fan. I use them exclusively on my old school (parallel fret) basses, as they are perfect.

When I got my Dingwalls, I was thrilled to see they make Super Brights in DW length so I snagged some and...meh. They sound nothing like they do on my other basses. After trying most other Dingwall strings, the SIT's are far and away my favorite. They sound and feel like Super Brights do on my other basses.

Which type of SITs would you recommend? I'm using GHS Pressurewounds right now but want to go back to a fully roundwound string when I change them. I was going to start with standard Dingwall nickel plated rounds, but open to suggestions.

It is great to see so many multiscale options. I feel i am in a safe space to say it here… but the lumpy/knobby look of spectors and warwicks never did it for me… but i love the sound. There is something just so timeless about the afterburner look. And the z is fantastic.

I go for tone, and function… but for me a bass needs to check off all the visual boxes also. Dingwall is the first brand to make me stray away from fso’s and rickenbacker.

After trying most other Dingwall strings, the SIT's are far and away my favorite.

FretNation put together a custom set of stainless SIT for my 4-string Z; they are really what that bass needed.

I like mids, but the woods and pickups in my bass already give it a solid foundation of mids.
The nickel strings I'd been using were pushing the bass to sound a bit nasal, and the stainless strings have counteracted that tendency and have given the bass a bit more grit and attitude.

But regardless of string material, SIT make strings well - and their customer service is solid.
They don't have as many gauge options as Kalium, but I had the SIT strings in a week, and all I had to do was pay for them (no IMs, phone calls, luck, or begging required)

I notice it says specifically made for 37" Dingers. Any idea if these would be ok on a shorter scale Super P5?
I assume the T indicates tapered at the bridge?

Now that I don't know but it's possible the B string could be too long for a Super. It tapers just past the nut on a 37" and the Super is 35", correct? With a Super you're not as limited on string choices, I think these are just Power Wound Nickels. But I'm not sure what the proper length for a Super would be.

The .077T, .098T, and .128T are Tapered at the bridge and the “Live” part of the string is 39”. (S.I.T.'s standard Extra Long Scale bass strings have a “Live” part that is 38”) They are made to fit Dingwall basses with a longer B-String.

So a Super would probably fine with just normal Extra Long strings, but their normal strings are not tapered. I'm sure SIT would put a set together for you that is their Dingwall set with a different B string if you'd want to go through all that

And then there were two. i got this ab1 from a member here after losing out on it in late october 2021. Alder body, darkglass preamp, luminlay side dots.

It was late so i only played it clean through my headphones… but first impressions:

the wenge neck looks gorgeous and with the deeper cut on the upper horn… the neck feels like it goes for days.

The black hardware looks great, and i like the smooth curve the 5 knobs take… vs the more V of the ng.

Both have alder bodies… but the wenge neck really adds more low mids for a warmer, darker… fuller sound. The maple ng neck adds a lot of clarity and brightness. They are a nice complement.

Lumenlay dots on the
Side of the neck are cool… but not mega bright. In a dark room you will find your neck however. I will stick with them for my custom build. Wonder if they can do the d in lumenlay also? That would be cool.

i love the classic shape and elegant simplicity of the bass. It has a big visual impact.

Welp... that decides it for me. AB1 with wenge neck.

Payson's nickel rounds for the Super series are worth checking out.

Do not put a long scale set on a Super. It’s not good.
Dingwall makes medium scale strings and Payson has an offering as well designed for that scale
