So I contacted Bass Central and did a thing...
But it's a USA thing instead of a Canadian thing. Been deciding to go with either a Dingwall or an MTD and at this time I felt grabbing the MTD was best.
I tried to buy three different Droc 5ers and came up short each time two online inventory wasnt up to date and one used just sold over the weekend. I think that will be my gateway DW and after I let the wallet heal from the MTD I'll put in my DW order.

I've got an untouched blackburst D Bird sitting with my folks in Australia to try when I get back haha.
I might sell it now I have a D Bird and D Roc custom though. I do prefer the Bird shape but the Roc looks great in some colours.

Ok guys I got a couple of questions…
1-are the pickups the same in NG models and Droc models the same ?

2-If they are why does it seem the NG seems underpowered in terms of just straight up balls.

3-If they are the same can you change things in the NG-3 and make it sound close to a Droc ? If so how

sorry for the newbie questions but I’m just trying to learn as much as possible

also I did play a Droc and my NG3 side by side and yeah the Droc was all stock and it had way more balls.

I don't know the answer to any of your questions, but have you checked the pickup heights? In my experience with my SP5, a few mm can make a big difference.

Unsure on the answer, but, I'm assuming you're comparing the D-Roc (import) and NG3, I would assume they're the same (FD-3n). But the NG may not have the same rotary switch, so that'd be one thing to confirm too. Plus you're comparing an active bass to a passive one.

Not really a fan of saying something has "balls" as that doesn't really, to me, convey any meaningful tonality/timber. Strings, picking style, setup, all heavily come into play as well here. Plus don't be afraid to use your amp to dial in, er, "balls" to your liking. That's why we have gain and EQ afterall.

You're right - they both should be equipped with FD-3n's.

NG-3 is also passive as well, so just using the active portion to make the description makes no sense as it has two options for sound. But I did use the active preamp and power wise the Droc had more to it…

Preamps are more for tonal control is there a boost yes but not as much as people at times think.

I mean, if you're just saying one has more output than the other, then that comes down to strings (to an extent, more mids will be perceived as "louder"), play style, setup. But, I mean, different basses sound different, too. If you're in the "All 3" setting on a D-Roc, that's going to sound just a wee bit different than N+B in parallel on an NG. There's so many factors, I'm not even sure I understand why the two are being compared.

I'm also not really needing "explained" what a preamp is and does... been around the block more than a handful of times, including my own circuit designs (and failures) along the way.

You can plug in two basses and have the same settings to compare just the bass sounds without EQ some of us feel this really shows you what the bass itself is capable of. You can engage the active preamp with everything dead center and the bass just has a bit of a boost. But again tonally the sound is more or less the same with the EQs on flat.
