Played around with my newly available "B+M in Parallel" setting this morning. Sort of a faux-Sterling thing as opposed to the series equivalent being a faux-Stingray thing. This setting has a lot going for it and I suspect is where this bass will live nearly permanently on live gigs with my show band. It's got a lot of the Stingray vibe that I like but none of the things I don't like about a Stingray. It's got just enough of the comb filtering in the midrange that I associate with a Jazz bass to sweeten the tone but not so much that it gets lost in a mix the way a Jazz can sometimes do. It doesn't have quite the sparkly top end of a Jazz but it's still present enough for everything I do so it's probably beneficial. Before I installed the 6-way I would usually leave it in "B+N in Parallel" with a slight mid boost and high cut on its Glock preamp to get it sounding good in my IEMs. This new "B+M in Parallel" is sort of that tone but with the EQ left flat. I can see why they made it one of the options on the D-Roc switch.

I tend to like streamlining things in my life. Everything I need, nothing I don't. Whenever possible and within reason. I think my ideal scenario would be a 3-way switch with B+N in parallel, M solo, and B+M in parallel. At this point I can't see using any of the other positions in 99.9% of situations.

Easy enough to do, really. Could do that with your current 6 position, or get a 3 position rotary and drop in.
I also aim for "what will I actually use". Having 6 positions is great if I'll use them all regularly, but, I won't. I'll have 2 or maybe 3 I'll use regularly, and the others would just be there for no gain.

I could have easily lived with a 4-way switch BUT need both N+B and M+B in series, and simply couldn't figure out how to do that myself :)

Previously I had my own 9-way switching setup by combining the stock 4-way Dingwall switch in "NG-2" mode, and an On/On/On switch for the Neck pickup. Again, couldn't get the two series options I wanted. And it allowed me to explore all other possibilities and realize (a) what I needed, and (b) want I didn't need.

Before that I added series/parallel switches for each pickup - realized I greatly prefer the pickups in Parallel.

Hey Dingwall Fans,

I was the one who purchased the bass below and it arrived today:
Dingwall Super J 5, Blackburst Second Hand and Ex-demo Bass Guitar Stock:: For sale, UK, EU, Warwick:: Bass Direct :: USA, Birmingham, London, Manchester

I have had nothing but great dealings with BassDirect in the past, but I am disappointed with this one.

Notice the only pictures used were the original ones from Dingwall, this bass was described as 9.9/10 and FDV were mentioned in the a paragraph at the end of the webpage.

The bass was poorly packed with around 6” of empty space between the gig bag and top of the box and absolutely no packaging was present between the gig bag and the top of the box.

There was no mention (nor pictures) of the well-used clear stick-on pickguard nor the scratches on the FD3 pickups.

The bass was advertised as 9.9/10, but it has wear marks that I would call significant. Here is one on the bottom of the bass:

Finally, the ad said the bass was setup with new strings and was cleaned, but the strings are not new and there is all kinds of dirt/build-up between the pickups and the body.

I have emailed Bass Direct and am awaiting their response.

Aesthetic imperfections and pickup surprise aside, the bass is pretty incredible. It is a nice and light 8lbs 1oz and plays like a dream.

I know this may be me being picky, but at this price point I was not expecting any surprises.

Sorry for the rant…

If anyone is considering a used bass from Bass Direct I would recommend asking for a current picture of the bass.

Considering the inaccurate description, I would not be cool with the condition of this fine bass. I would hope that the clear plastic can be removed without compromising the finish. Is it matte?

I had a similar experience with them.

Their website pictures were much more favorable than the bass actually was in person.

Packed underwhelmingly.

Strings were old and the set up was total trash.

I’m sorry this happened. This bass looks amazing and I would have my excitement tainted for sure by this experience. I think you’re definitely founded in your disappointment. Hopefully it ends well

OUCH!

Keep us posted.

I have found that lately (and I'm not sure why), that my thumb is sore from pressing too hard on the back of the neck. I've never needed to press hard and hadn't had an issue before so I definitely think this is a subconscious thing for some reason. When I play my Sklar, I tend to wrap my thumb (I've heard it is not good to do that and I've heard - who cares - do what you need to) around the neck, so it hasn't really been an issue there. I've been leaving my Sklar out on the stand to play at home so I have been playing it more. Maybe I'm just getting used to the thinner neck? I usually play my ABs for actual sets and that is where I am doing it.

Any tips? I'm guessing the main answer will be "practice not doing that". o_O

I’ve noticed that thin necks cause me to do strange things with my thumb on the fretting hand, leading to discomfort.

What has worked for me is to try playing something without using the thumb and then looking at how my hand is positioned on the neck. Then you can place the thumb back again without putting pressure on it, because you already got used to playing something using only your “fretting strength” and not by gripping the neck
