I know you didn’t ask for my input but I have a decent amount of experience regarding the Payson .145T in Drop A.

I’m a balanced tension guy until the day I die but I will admit, right around this gauging is where I start to feel the symptoms of phat string syndrome. More uncomfortable to play and the string seems like it chokes more as well.

I recorded a pretty heavy extreme metal cover with a .130 and retracked everything with the .145. Didn’t make as much of a difference in the clarity department as I had hoped. Just thought I would share some thoughts.

I appreciate that, thanks for sharing! That's good info. Like you said, balance is a thing for me as well - thats why I went down this road to try and match the tension with the 125 for the C. I'll have a better feel after the band gets together. Sounded good on a recording though. I hunted for a .135, I figured that might be a good middle road, but cant find one.

I've got an extra nut so if it doesn't work out I can swap that pretty easily. I'm using the DW set in drop A as well and the .130 A is just fine for that. I've never really experimented like this with different gauges/tunings. Learning process for sure!

Speaking of strings and tunings - since I am new to dingwall, I would like to see if any different gauges would be better for my C standard tuning.

Currently, the bass is strung with these.

There is nothing wrong with these in my tuning basically, but I had a look at the official website and they recommend from 124 to 53 for C standard.

Any thoughts on this?

Looks like you just need a couple single B strings, ideally from a Dingwall longscale nickel set. That would get you close, right? Or just tune these down and they should be fine.

I’m using the A-C strings of Payson and Dingwall sets tuned to E-G, so even more down tuned (2-1/2 steps) and they work fine.

The Dbird, Drocs need a winding length that will reach the 36.25” E string. I’ve found DR sets just make it across the nut on the E. Pure Blues are a nice choice.

Payson strings is an excellent source for drop in fit. Not sure if he does international shipping.

Jason at FretNation.com is an expert in what strings work with Dingwall.

Congrats on the Droc, that’s a beauty. Make sure to check out that bridge pup solo with the tone rolled off, it’s got funk for days. So nasty.

Thanks. I'll definitely look into strings once I've eaten thru the packs I got.

Also that bridge with tone rolled off is wayyyyy too vintage for me :)
I really dig the clank, though. All 3 or the parallell plus the tone fully open... Just wow.

I’m doing this with a Super P, AB-1, and a Dbird. All four strings. The Super has TI flats, and truth be told, it’s a little on the stupid light side. Muting can easily turn into fretting and harmonics are everywhere.

The Super P really liked GHS Boomers .030. A stock set.

This has been an ongoing experiment, maybe a couple years now. I’m looking for that fine line of super light. It’s kind of a moving target as my technique evolves with the setup.

It all started with a used set of Dingwalls and a single C String. About $4 for a single C to see if it had possibilities.

The Payson reduced core nickels are working really well.

Day 500 of no access to B+M in series, the bright side is I have fallen in love with middle only across all styles.

Also will drop some initial thoughts on Newtone Steel strings. I got the hex core set but they are less scooped/sweeter than I was expecting, not too far removed from their nickel set from what it seems.

Finally sending my bass to Mo after this run of theatre shows ends so wish me good shipping luck.
