Dingwall Owners Club

To those considering buying KZ in ears—be sure to read up on the recent controversy involving non-functional drivers. It turns out that most of their models may effectively be single-driver IEMs, despite the presence of additional components.

My sound guy and I both got multiple different pairs to demo before the news broke, and we both agreed that there were serious diminishing returns as we moved up their product lineup. For example, I could not hear a significant difference between the ES4s ($18 at the time) and the AS10s ($60). We ended up buying a bunch of ES4s (the cheapest pair we demoed) and boy were we glad we didn't spend more on the "better" ones.

Controversy or not, the IEMs do work well for their price, even if they're really only one driver. Some of the models (notably the ZS10s) do have a different frequency response from the others. The bottom line is they're worth it if you like them, but it's still good to be informed.
 
Nate, I use IEM’s from Plunge Audio here in Calgary. I think mine are the “engineer” model. They aren’t cheap, but they are nearly perfect in every way. Almost full noise isolation when in my ears, flat and wide frequency response for pretty much the whole frequency spectrum, and so well built. I use a mix of gear depending on where I’m playing (live or in studio) but generally I keep it as simple as possible for my IEM mix. Just me, lead vocals, and a bit of drums and guitar to keep my place in the music straight.
 
I don't find I have to adjust my IEM levels too much; mostly the guitar because he often doesn't send the same signal level to the PA every time.

My lead guitarrist does this as well, it drives me nuts! the worst is when he starts really low so I turn him up in my ears and then he turns up his distortion pedal in the break and I get blasted on the 1st song. I tried talking to him about keeping his gains stages at unity but he just does not get it...

I forgot about Plunge. I reached out many years ago just for some custom plugs but due to work I couldn’t sneak in to see Simon during his hours.

the new universals sound like a serious option at a smaller price tag then customs.

This will obviously depend on your computer, but PCI/PCIe and FW are effectively dead at this point. USB-A is still around and kicking, and is perfectly fine for most applications where your I/O count is low. USB-C is the new standard and has sufficient bandwidth for basically any application. I’ve run 32 simultaneous tracks via USB-C without so much as a hiccup.

What makes you say so, market statistics or something ?

Plus the performance is often night and day, unless the USB drivers have been seriously customized (and then how long will your version of your OS be supported ..).

Naive question, I'm definitely not an expert on the subject.
Well, on PC expansion buses yes but audio cards certainly not.

I know this question has probably been beaten to death but what was relevant a year or two ago maybe different now?
I just picked up a used NG2 5 string that the previous owner converted to an NG3 using the conversion kit. I am thinking about upgrading the pickups. The pups in there now have major string rash , it’s doesn’t effect the sound but I like nice things. The stock pups seem a little to bright and clanky for me. I can dial it down to an acceptable level, which I do. But I like upgrading, I like making things custom for me.
Our band plays a lot of classic rock, some new rock , some old bluesy type . We play a large variety.
I have listened to the sound samples on the Dingwall site. I like the sound of the P-Tone, FD3 and the Super Fatty ll.
What are some real world experiences some of you may have had? What combinations did you find that worked best in a 3 pup configuration? Do you think there is really a major difference between the import pups and the others?
I don’t really have to upgrade I just want to.

The simple fact that most manufacturers aren’t building them with those connection protocols anymore. USB-A, USB-C and TB are where the market is going, or rather already is. FW is dead. PCI/PCIe is only still around in specialty applications.

It's not trendy for sure, but at the pro-level I have the impression it's either here to stay or gets slowly replaced by networked interfaces no ?
Usb and Tb seems to be all the rage for consumer/prosumer-level stuff, but I've never seen a studio using protools with usb interfaces for instance.
I could be wrong of course.

The FD34n pick ups that come on the combustions are I believe the hottest Output pickups from dingwall. They really are fantastic. One way to minimize the clank is to lower those pick ups. You will lose a bit of output doing this but you will find significant differences in sound/output with the range of height adjust. My main player that gets the most time(mainly thru headphones right now) I actually have the pick ups quite low. It took some exploration to find that happy spot.

With that,

if you get some Canadian pick ups you’ll find the FD3 to be similar to the production ones but a little less output and a more refined articulate tone. Quite ballsy and clear. Can really crunch nice too.

I think the P tone is kind of self explanatory. It’s a great sounding pick up with more mids up front as you’d expect and can be used to add some wool or grit to your sound but softens up nicely with the tone rolled back.

The SF2s. I just recently got to try an SF2 for the first time. I swapped out my FD3s in my SJ for a P tone and SF2.
This added more warmth, and a bit of beef in the low end. The sound of the instrument smoothed out. It’s sounds big but not as “edgy” as it used to with the FD3s


I’d also recommend some Payson nickes. They don’t bite as hard as SS for example.

Not at all. Other than legacy machines you’ll find most professional level operations are largely USB-C these days. It’s fast enough for anything that’s needed, comes built into any computer you buy, and as such manufacturers all went that direction. There are some great articles on the death of PCI/PCIe. These days if you’re on a modern computer it doesn’t make sense to buy anything that’s not USB-C save for low track count operations where even USB-A (3.0) is perfectly fine. Network connections via Ethernet are actually quite slow in practice. Dante, Madi, AVB, etc. are more for expansion than direct computer connection in most cases.

I guess it comes down to portability. Why use pcie when you can keep a thing smaller and on the outside.

Couple it with hopefully usb c becoming a global standard and bam. Save those pcie slots for gpus or whatever else uses it.
 
I'm not so sure about that - as soon as you get high-end converters and preamps portability is out anyway, it's gonna be several rack units regardless of the type of connectivity to the daw host.
Oh okay. I wouldnt know a thing about that - never used that kind of big equipment before. I was thinking smaller size, more every day consumer level.

They’re probably around somewhere. I haven’t read any in quite a while. All you have to do is compare the spec of even consumer-tier USB-C interfaces to the few remaining PCIe models still available to see that it’s not worth bothering with a technology that’s on its way out. Why bother with PCIe when many USB-C interfaces will get you sub-1ms latency on surprisingly high track counts? Get to professional tier USB-C and you can retain sub-1ms latency across 64+ tracks without breaking a sweat on an off the shelf computer.

Buy what you like, use what you like. The market availability will provide a more clear comparison over what’s actually being used these days. A spec comparison will show why. Now back to our regularly scheduled Dingwall programming.
