Every new overseas Dingwall I have ever touched came from shop like that with pickups a couple mm from the strings, way higher than the setup video recommends. Not sure why they do it.

Before you start thinking about shelling out money for a tech - hows the setup? Maybe it moved a bit over time/season? Just... Check your setup first?Thanks for your feedback Nate. I can't see any gaps or lifting... I am really baffled. If it is fret wear, it must be distributed pretty well... I can't see any depressions. No issues ever with this fantastic instrument until this, and it is really very minor. But no buzz is good buzz for me...
Yes, I am looking at the setup as well. It has never ever been touched since it came out of the build shop. Honestly it has been perfect for me and I am reluctant to mess with it. I am an expert at screwing things up...
Go with new strings 1st. THEN assess if you need a set up. @Pablo504

Yes, I had a talk with the Dingwall tech at the workshop in Saskatoon and he suggested restringing it before doing anything else.
Yup - strings first, then see if the issue is still there.
My guess with 11-month old strings would be that maybe the strings have stretched a bit and the truss rod has pulled the neck a bit too flat - as long as the action was consistent with the fretboard radius, I'd expect it to buzz on all the strings in that region.
The fact that it's only buzzing on the D means that the D is a little low in relation to the other strings.
If the bass hasn't had a setup in 12 years, it's probably due.
Dingwalls are rock solid basses, but they need to be adjusted occasionally.
Check the saddle at the bridge. The bass has so much resonation that it literally rattles the saddle screws loose. There is a separate chat regarding this and the fix (loc-tite).
The OP has an AB2, it’s highly unlikely there is any issue with the saddle.
The design isn’t at all comparable to the combustion line which can come loose (although that mostly seems to be a real problem for those using bridge cables as strings).

THIS Sklar on Reverb in the classifieds is amazing, but it's $5k, and I'm not sure I want another $5k bass sitting around that I can't sell (like my MTD Norm Stockton Saratoga)
How much will I be "missing out" on the full Dingwall experience if I get the Combustion, vs an AB1 or Lee Sklar?

If you’re in the US just buy a combustion from a US dealer, you’re gonna get hit with import duty and end up paying the same or more with shipping.

Don't think you'll be missing out at all. In fact, you just might catch a bad case of DAS (incurable I might add).
I ordered my new (to me) ABZ5 off of TB almost 10-years ago. It's still my primary player!
I don't think there is a wrong choice when getting your feet wet with Dingwall!
PS. Yeah that Sklar is sweet!
That Sklar is sweet and that AB is spec’d dangerously tempting. I bet if GPX had it on reverb it would be long gone. I cannot understand why it’s still around. I think bang for buck id be after that AB but if you prefer the thinner necks then go straight to the Z3 Sklar
That is a nice combustion and they have a GREAT photographer. I’d find a less expensive one myself but I almost always consider resale value as part of a purchase. The gov and banks take enough money, I don’t need to lose it on my own bad decisions.
