Honestly the neck woods options available have me really curious and tempted to do another build.

I think I’d go Ovangkol but roasted ash is mega tempting. Probably ebony board but even PF is super tempting.

I really appreciate it and Rosewood on some older Dingwall’s and other basses.

I had an early (2006) SJP4 that had a pencil thin neck. The nut was technically 1.5” but if you measured straight across the neck, it was really 1.4”. Super thin.

IIRC the P neck was wider then. Are they both wider now, or is the J4 neck still skinny?

I just lined up the three models I have presently, Super P, AB-1, Dbird, (all four strings) and the specs are nearly identical except for the scale length of the Super P. Nut, thickness, width at the heel, and string spacing.

Drocs and Supers stay with the 19 mm string spacing for both 4 & 5 strings, Afterburners go to 18mm with 5 & 6 strings.

That's good, not sure what a small upcharge is though. Last time I was looking at Sadowsky’s, a P profile was only available as a custom. I must definitely be in the P width neck minority, kinda explains why 7ender stays in business. I buy my P necks from Fender or Musikraft to transplant onto my 4's.

I don’t have dates or times either, but can offer some insight.

Wait times for guitars ordered from dealers should be measured in units of months, not weeks, unless the manufacturer has the desired item in stock ready to ship. You could luck out and order a piece for youself that is almost ready for sale, or have to wait as the ordered piece goes through the series of events that most imported merchandise goes through.

In the instance of imported guitars, many factors are in play. First, imports aren’t ordered as single units by the importing manufacturer - instruments usually are sold in production runs of 10-30 pieces. They will not ship until the entire run is ready to ship. This consolidation reduces overseas shipping costs.

In terms of shipping, the entire order of dozens of instruments could be ready, but may experience a delay until an entire shipping container bound for the US is completely filled with merchandise of varied types is filled to capacity. Once again, this is scales of economy at work.

On the QC front, the overseas manufacturer can be kept waiting as the importer supplies raw materials. They can’t build until they get it. This happens in cases where overseas guitar builders are supplied with domestic hardwoods. Finally, another delay time would be experienced as the imported instrument gets a QC and set up check on domestic soil by the company that originally ordered it. This takes time, even if there is a dedicated staff doing it, as there is at Dingwall. It’s important to regard Dingwall as what it is - a facility in an industrial park, not a football-stadium sized behemoth.

This is a standard of manufacturing that is shared by almost all builders that import instruments from overseas fabricators. It’s not a big arcane secret, but it’s not completely common knowledge.

John is generally well informed and will share what he knows and learns as information arrives, that one thing about John, he's constantly checking with manufacturers. This I've found, as I'm sure others have, thru dealing with him over the years. The mans on point.

There’s a lot of factors involved. As others have said, the imports come in in batches, and it could be a while before the orders that Dingwall have in to their contracted factory overseas include the particular model and color a customer wants. For example, I contacted FretNation about ordering my NG3 6-string in Black Forest Green, shortly after the first run of that color had hit the dealers around the country and had mostly sold. I put in the deposit with Jason at FN in November of 2021, and he let me know that the bass would be arriving at Dingwall for QC and setup a year later, November 2022. Set up took extra time, since I had specified the bass to be set up and strung for F#0 tuning, and I finally received the bass this month.

I likely would have had less wait time if I hadn’t ordered right after the first batch of them had come and mostly been sold, but still would have received it on the date I did, unless the dealer had missed the window to get hold of a bass from that batch…which would have made my wait even longer.

Hopefully, the white will be further along in the queue of production/shipping for you than my BFG was for me, when I put in my order, and you’ll have less wait time. But it’s really all down to when particular batches are ordered, shipped, and whether a dealer has any that are coming, that are not already claimed by a customer with a prior order.

But definitely email JFB. His customer service is unparalleled, and if he knows anything more definite, he’ll tell you. If he doesn’t, he’ll do his damnedest to find out anything he can.

I'm still looking for a Super 4, but now it looks like only a P/PJ 4 will work unless it's a J4 with the P neck width (I know, that's most likely a unicorn, right?). Turns out the Super 5s have the same neck width, the 4s don't, and my aged fretting hand requires a wider neck, one of the perks of 55 years of bass playing, 71 years of life, and a genetic hand issue

Also, since I don't and have never had Facebook, if anyone sees one on the Facebook Dingwall marketplace page, could you please let me know?

Thanks, Reverb has crazy pricing, usually $700 to $1,000 and up more than Talkbass pricing. I do still have my SJ5XXX, so I'm not going to spend Crazy $ on a Super 4

That chocolate P has been on my watch list for years... So so sexy. I'm so happy to have my DROC back though. I hadn't played it for a week and plugged it in last night and was just blown away with how great it sounds.

My Dingwall ABII custom was 5mos, and that was only after being bumped up in the order queue.
My Sadowsky was in the queue for 2yrs during COVID, well worth the wait.
My MTD USA has been over a year - granted, I made changes just before it went to the bench.
Moral of the share: Quality takes time. Custom hand-made basses can be a 6mo-24mo thing.

Calgary Long & McQuade had a white P4 I was going to buy a little while back,not sure if it sold or not. They won't ship to the US but I'm sure that could be figured out.
