They are smooth and you don't really notice the pores. I've had two customs with wenge and I still have my Droc standard. The biggest tone difference between them all was due to different pickups.

I will add to @Nuage420 comment. Tonally, the pickups+preamp will make the most impact with regards to the sound. I had a german Warwick with a wenge neck and fingerboard and it felt amazing. I loved the look and feel of that wenge neck. It feels smooth but it's unvarnished so it feels natural. Also, it's a denser wood so "supposedly" they don't move as much as other woods.
It's worth poibting put that a Warwick wenge neck is pourous, where as a Dingwall wenge neck is very smooth.

The way Dingwall make it, it feels the same as a maple neck. Tone wise there's a bit more growl, but the differences are minor. You'll love it.
The new Chinese D-Roc 5s have arrived and they don't have Hipshot LIC tuners...
I wonder what else has changed.

I’m kinda surprised that if they wanted to go Chinese made and cheaper they didn’t just use the Guyker copies of the Hipshot ultralites. They look just like the Hipshot Licensed ones, have the same dimensions, and are about $30 for a set on Amazon (probably way less if you’re in China and buying in bulk). I have used some Guyker stuff (mostly bridges on FSOs) and they’re great. Pretty much the same quality and functionality of Gotoh or Fender brand high mass bridges for 1/3 to 1/2 the price.
Personally, based on aesthetics alone, I would only ever order an AB with corresponding fretboard and neck materials: I just can’t get over how jarring that piece of maple between a wenge board and the pickups looks in the context of the super-refined Afterburner design.
The decision towards either maple on maple or wenge on wenge/roasted ash would be a little harder for me, but my track record so far points very much towards wenge. I really seem to like wenge, come to think of it.

That's part of my struggle. I was considering the wenge / roasted Ash.
I have also considered ebony/ wenge but I have an EBMM with ebony / roasted maple already.
Ah I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the correction. I considered the Warwick wenge necks to be smooth so I can imagine the Dingwall ones are amazing
The Warwick I owned was almost 25 years old and the wenge FB was in very good condition. The frets weren't so I know it was used a lot
AFAIK, ebony is only available for fretless basses, anyway.
Edit: As it seems, I have mixed up multiple things. Ebony is available for (fretted) fretboards.

Are there any US dealers still selling Dingwall pickups? I see Bass Direct in the UK has a limited supply listed on their website, but I'm not finding anything similar in the US. I could always call the Bass Shop or John Fox to confirm, but I'm curious if anyone else has had any luck buying them in the US.
Bass Direct, being on the other side of the pond, usually gets some larger orders and has some in stock. But our US dealers such as John Fox and Fret Nation don't need that. You just tell them what you want and they order it for you. You can also order pickups directly from Dingwall, but freight is more expensive, so I'd use a dealer. What are you looking for?
Jason at FN can order whatever pickups you want. I've gotten 2 sets of FD3's and a set of SF2's through him.
Going by my current order expected around December/January, 3 years, but some are getting theirs sooner. Expect at least 2 right now.
I’m ordering through Jason at Fret Nation. He said right now they are quoting 1.5 years for delivery but they are hopeful for sooner. He said we will finalize the specs one month before it goes into production.
I’m not in a big hurry, I have 8 perfectly fine and functional basses at the moment. 4 of them being import dingwall’s .
The way I look at it is, it just gives me more time to change my mind and spend more money, lol.
Just toying with some ideas for my 4-string Super J 3X. I haven’t decided if I even want to do anything at this point and wanted to see what the costs were.
