Well, my anticipation level to hear the Dingwall nickel strings has risen. I swapped the DR LoRider nickels from my J/P to my J/J and Dingwall steels to the J/P and tested the results through the (Walkabout/Showman) home rig. The DR's had sounded good on the J/P at home, but were giving me too much bright and not enough body through the main rig. The J/P just sounds righteous with Dingwall steels. The DR nickels bring a really cool vibe to the J/J. Full and present where I want it. Not mellow, but less aggressive than the steels. Now I'm hyper to hear Sheldon's nickels on this one!

Bad news, I won't be getting my Super P refinished anytime soon.

Good news, a dream bass came up for a good deal.

Bad news, dream bass costs considerably more than the refine. Will have to sell miscellaneous gear in order to keep both.

even worse news, will be out of town when it arrives. Hopefully will be able to get in on Thursday but it will have to sit in the depot for a few days.

My SP5 has a dead spot at C on the G-string. Not drastic, but noticeable. None of my others have any that I can detect.

GW, with this stable, deciding what to gig on any given night has to be a very tough choice.

Long time ooogler/infrequent poster. I may have only posted initially after getting my Super J5..... around about this time last year. Been meaning to subscribe to the the thread for a while....so here I go.

This post is just some misc stuff I've been meaning to post.

Got a set (actually bought two) of the Dingwall Stainless. I am liking the strings, compared to the ones that it shipped with. Really great tone. I am digging them...but the tension may be just a tad stiff for me. May try a set of DR's (light gauge Low Riders) next time I need changing just to compare.

Since getting the SJ5, and following Zoomie's posts re: oddering a SP5......it seems that I have come down with a bit of a G.A.S/D.A.S attack. Never had a P. Have always been more of a J guy....but lately have been contemplating getting one. Tonight I told my wife that my Black Super J5 said it needs a friend. Let's just say...she (my wife) didn't say no...so I assume that that is tacit approval.

Initially, I was contemplating ordering a three tone sunburst SP5, black pickguard, wenge neck/fingerboard with white pearloid blocks. But now I'm starting to lean heavily toward a natural Ash Body (Satin Finish)...as it seems that that may a better visual contrast for the Wenge neck/finger board. Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions are welcome. If I am able to pull this off...probably won't put the order in till close to the end of the year.

Welcome back! Two excellent choices. Of these, I would pick natural/satin. Do you like transparent white, by chance? Barry L. has one with a black pick guard but with a bird's eye maple neck that I'd like to see.

I currently have a white Factor...which I've had since 85...even had a white Ric before that. Kind of burnt out on white...though transparent white looks nice for sure. I kind of want something in a natural or stain or burst finish...something that shows the wood grain in some capacity. Was leaning away from maple board...though I really dig maple (both my SJ5 and my 77 J have maple boards)...I think a darker wood (especially wenge) with white block inlays will be a nice complement to what I have.

Interesting. The CC/PW genre has me all over my neck......in ridiculous places, and I have not noticed anything on the SJ5, but in all fairness, I've never looked/listened. If there is a soft note somewhere, it is clearly not enough to notice.

My AVRI P does have a slight soft note up on the D somewhere.

Once the Super P5 arrives I'll check, but I'd be shocked if anything material shows. I just don't see Sheldon tolerating a significant issue.

I have worked diligently to avoid moving to this conversion. Sadly, the thought wont go away. Hoping the the SP5 kills the desire.

This is third comment that I have read about the new strings having slightly more tension. If this is so, I am downright giddy. I'd actually prefer a bit more tension.

If your budget allows, I'd get the order as quickly as you can. The last person to comment said that they were running 7-8 months on Super P builds. Worst case, be sure to get your order submitted prior to NAMM. Sheldon always seems to get pig piled with orders after NAMM once booth visitors drink the Dingwall KoolAid.

As for finish choice with the wenge neck, that's going be tricky as it is totally personal taste. I have seen natural light wood dark wood combos that looked great and others that didn't. If you are unsure, nothing wrong with seeking Barry's/Sheldon's advice. By my eye/taste, I have seen exactly one (arguably) ugly Dingwall. This tells me both Barry and Sheldon work diligently to talk people down off the roof when they ask for something that may not work.

Ken and I both have Super P's due any day/week. Both of us have our noses pressed against the window pining for the delivery truck. My Christmas IS my Super P5 !

And once again off topic, I'm play the Fender P this weekend as I have been camping the SJ5 for months. Interestingly, the regular frets played up high during one of the arrangements are irritating the crap out of me. Very uncomfortable hand position. Jumped back on the SJ5 and no discomfort.
