Whatcha talking 'bout Willis?

I've spent the last 2 days testing my ABZ5, miticolously playing every note on every fret, every string, including open ones, and... all I've found was 125 LIVE spots!!

that's 24 frets x 5 strings = 120 + 5 open notes, total 125 spots and none of 'em were rigor mortis. I've been playing these low end things for over 30 years, I should be able to tell if any of my spots were dead.

The ABZ is check, the search continues on my ABII next and then the Super J/P after that.

Watch this space...... I will report casualties as I find them, IF I find them.

The Rastaburst is pretty clean on dead spots, but the band I'm in now has a lot of songs written in flats or sharps, and I have found a 2 fret range on my D string that doesn't ring quite as solidly as the rest...right around the 8th fret.

I heard that Saskatoon is going to get really cold, even by Saskatoon standards. If someone in the shop would be so kind as to place a fleecie on my upcoming SP5, I'd be grateful. I'd hate for it to catch a cold. 😁

The wait isn't bad initially, as long as you have another Dingwall to get you through those cold lonely nights. But then you start twitching about 60 days prior to approximate completion date.

Personally, I think that The house of Dingwall is going to be very busy of 2014. I suspect we will see wait times draw out.

I was told 6-7 months for my SP4. Alot better than let's say a year. I guess I'll be fine since I have the SJ

Wish I could say I ordered a fiver like everyone else but a 4 is more like home for me.

Upgrading the pickups first - Combustions come with FD-3As and those are not half bad. The preamp upgrade made a bigger difference in my experience with upgrading the Combustion. FD-3As are not half bad, just the opposite. To most basses you see in stores, installing FD-3As would be an upgrade. It's the preamp that's sub-par in Combustions.

The question was not whether pickups or the preamp should be replaced, it's which should be replaced first. I'm assuming that both would be eventually replaced, and I would recommend replacing both in order to achieve that modern sound.

As for the B booster kit, it is no longer necessary. It was available for the first batch of Combustions, possibly the second, I don't recall exactly. I seem to recall Sheldon saying something like that - the booster either comes preinstalled now, or is no longer needed because of other improvements. Finally, I think the booster has something to do with FD-3As specifically and none of the other pickups.

While I love being able to pick up a four and just grip and rip, in the end I decided that I had a great opportunity to secure identical necks for My interpretation of the perfect P and J. I figured that I could always go back and order a four.

Turns out it was a great call for me as all this CC stuff has a ton of low B in it and I have been camping the SJ5 full time for the last couple of months.

If it is any thing remotely close to my SJ4 I'm sure it will be awesome. Especially being that I ordered what I wanted.

Maybe After this one is fully paid off I might try out a Combustion 5. Saw black with maple and black pearl pg that got me. I was just afraid the same thing would happen every time I get a 5. As long as I keep my 4's around it should be alright.

I managed to convince myself that I really should experience Sheldon's take on the precision bass and have been semi-patiently waiting for a sonic blue ash/maple SP-4. I'm hoping for a Dingwall kind of Christmas.

So...it will be three tone sunburst, Tort pickgaurd, Wenge neck and Wenge fingerboard with white Perloid block markers.

Apparently, I have been thinking of this type of bass for a while, as I found a Paint document that I did a mock up of for Lakeland P4. I know it's not a Dingwall...nor a 5 string....hope that is not sacrilege. I could post that pic if anyone is interested.

Me - only you can choose the perfect juice harp for metal. My soon to be delivered Dingwall Super P5 should have killer juice harp-like harmonic overtones, especially in the upper register!

I am excited about the reverse P set up.

Not sacrilege to speak fondly of Lakies, at least to me. I ran a Lakie DJ5 with Fralins that was monster. Weight was horrific. And I only kicked it to the curb when I ordered the SJ5, or somewhere thereabouts.
