Dingwall Owners Club

Yep, I like the FD3n pickup but the P-tone just sounds 'gooder' to me and the difference in sound is hard to describe (I wish they would bring back the pickup samples on the site). If you do it make sure you wire it series to avoid disappointment.
They still have this up on YouTube, which is very very good reference. Not as easy to A/B... I end up just having tabs open to timestamps for the ones I'm comparing. Also not sure how much compression or anything YT does to this, but it should at least give you a pretty good idea.

Without knowing the dyanmic range of the original recording uploaded by Dingwall it's impossible to know. Youtube will attempt to achieve an output of -14 LUFS. Anything coming in lower than that will have brickwall limiting applied automatically to bring it up to that level. Anything coming in higher than that will simply be turned down. The latter is the less destructive process in most cases as the brickwall limiting applied can be simultaneously indiscriminate and generic. I don't know if the LUFS value is momentary based on the loudest peak in a recording, integrated for the entire recording, or a set time value either based around the loudest peak or possibly the start of the recording. All platforms do it a little differently and change methodologies frequently, so it's hard to really know what's going on under the hood.

Anyone ever experience a dead spot on a Dingwall Super J 5-string? I know that it was a fairly common problem on Fender's, so since the Super J is Dingwall's modern take I suspect it might have something to do with the body style....

At any rate, I seem to be experiencing a dead spot on the high C# & D notes of the A string. I'm pretty bummed about it. Sigh.

I will say though that this bass exceeds expectation in every other regard.

The SuperP5 that I sold had a fairly notable dead spot in the usual Fender location around the 5th fret (C) on the G-string.

My older SJ5 has a little bit of a dead spot, but not nearly as noticeable.

I had a noticeable dead spot on one of my 3 Super 5s, an SPJ5, I actually reached out to have the neck replaced, but found the cost prohibitive. I know "they" say they all have one, but it wasn't noticeable on my other 4 Dingwalls.
I hate to add to this but yes I have. I’ve experienced it on the high C area of the D string more so on Long scales and it forced me to learn certain passages elsewhere on the fingerboard. That said, if that is the ONLY drawback I experience I came to the conclusion to work around it.

I feel no mater what brand, model, bass, there may always be a compromise on perfection and the playability, clarity, etc. win out over any other compromise I ever had to make on any other basses.

Thanks guys. I may just have to play around it... Now to figure out reworking a key line I play in C#m right there in the upper register. :blackeye:

Yes, on my SuperJ5. All my basses have dead spots. Some more, some less. Dingwalls much less than my Fenders and Stingrays.
Another related problem is wolf notes. Those are more present on other basses as well and almost non-existant on my DIngwalls.

Sample size i only 2 though, a Z3 and a SJ5.

Iirc, my old 2006 SJ/P4 had a bit of a weak spot on the G string in the normal (6th fret) position. Went and checked my SP and SPJ 4’s and it took a not insignificant amount of time listening for it, but there’s what I would call “a less sustained” element to that fret on that string but the note is clear and if I’m using it in context of playing a piece, I certainly don’t notice it. Only can kind of feel it as the note is halfway through its decay time. Definitely not to the point of having to avoid that spot for any real reason. If I wasn’t intentionally listening for it, I’d have never noticed. It took at least 4 seconds of letting the note ring out to be able to pick up on it

I didn't notice a dead spot on my SP5 last night. I have Elixir strings on it. Might be worth tuning down the string in question, making sure it's not twisted along it's length, and then retune.

I was perusing FretNation and was floored by how many sets they carry to fit long-scale Dingwalls now. I see D'addario NYXL, GHS Pressurewound, and Stringjoy sets that they didn't have last time I owned a long scale, plus SIT Powerwound, Dunlop Super Bright nickel, and the Spector fanned fret sets. What a time to be alive.

I'm perfectly pleased with the Dingwall brand nickels, but now I want to go down the rabbit hole.

EDIT: ordered the Super Bright set. I loved them on my Super P, so let's hear them on the AB!

I believe the Spector strings are a La Bella made string. I’m curious. I didn’t check the taper yet. In the end I probably won’t even explore as I’m really content with Payson offerings.

Yeah, I saw them touting "NY made" and assumed they meant La Bella.

I saw that Payson has more options now, too. I got a little burned out by his constant self promotion when he started sending DMs about his strings and bridge when I posted about a different multiscale bass I own. All for supporting a small business, but that was annoying.

I'll see how these Super Brights sound and then figure out what to try next. I've got a new interface and monitors coming, too, so I can snag some audio clips if folks are interested.

I have a set of the Spector strings. I haven't opened them yet since I sold the ABZ but I can take a peak when I get home.
And yes La Bella makes them.
