So, maple on maple is what I got.

Which one would you choose based on weight, club?

Roasted ash? Ovangkol? Wenge? Walnut?
I love the look of roasted ash, wenge... Walnut and Ovangkol, haven't seen much of this beyond that one custom droc someone here has with an Ovangkol neck.

The tone on my bubinga necked ABII 5 has a more compressed/focussed tone (may also be in part to the mahogany body), whereas maple has more of an open airiness to it. It feels great and is super smooth. It feels super solid.

Roasted ash I assume based on weight.
Based on weight wenge would be last on the list.

Good day all,

I’m new to the Dingwall world; bought a combustion 5 and received it last week. Relatively new to music/bass started the fall of 2021 with 4 string. Bought a used Ibanez SR605 to explore 5 string and fell in love with the Dingwall neck and B string so pulled the trigger. I’m also from the same province in Canada where Dingwall is located so it’s a nice personal piece.

Hey guys! New to the Dingwall club, just picked this old girl up!

I would really appreciate any info from you knowledgeable people as I can’t find much about it online. It is a Dingwall combustion, serial number 80.

I understand it has an EMG preamp, is it possible to mod this easily to make it have a passive mode? The preamp definitely has a hiss to it.

Are the pickups wired in series or parallel? Do these model pickups have a reputation for any particular tone compared to other Dingwall pickups (brighter, smoother, etc.)

It is missing the back battery cover. Anyone know how I could find or make a replacement?

Welcome to the club. This is a V1 combustion. The first run. They came out in 2009 I believe. The pick ups are passive and are based off of a P tone design. They sound great passive. just curious, have you tried pulling the volume pot? It’s been a while since I’ve had one of these in hand.


If it were me I’d consider replacing the preamp with a LHZ pre and possibly if you want something different for the pick ups put in some EMG 45 DCXs or if you want a more P bass vibe and a P5 X. Of course this will take you to active to territory only but it’s a very worthy modification to consider.

you should just be able to bypass the preamp though if you wanna start with that by removing from the signal chain. Get in there, trace the wires. It probably goes something like pickups>to blend>volume(B and V could be sequenced reverse of what I stated)>pre>jack so if you just went pick ups>blend>??and a passive tone control??>volume>jack you’d be good.
