Anyone else notice this little quality of life improvement on Dingwalls? I just saw it in a video about a Sklar model, wonder if it's on everything now a days? My last Canadian was in 2021, and a Z. Would be cool if this was on all Canadian ones, even though it's fairly rare for me to pop op the control cavity.

I heard a sample of the dingwall z3 with glockenklang pre on youtube, and it sounded really good.
However, the price is way out of my budget, so I'm looking to buy an NG3 or C3 to replace my preamp.
Which one would sound more similar?

Wildly depends on a lot. Neither pre in the Imports sound like the Glock in my opinion/experience. And then it depends on which pickups the Z was loaded with, as well. All of that before getting into the entire "tonewood" debate, too. Then amp, effects, cab, mic, and so on.
I think between the two, out of the box, the C3 is going to be more similar to a Glock + FD3 Z, than an NG. But I wouldn't buy either expecting it to sound identical to a Z. Same ballpark, probably.

I have the Glockenklang preamp on my ABI and I really like it a lot. That said, when I had my NG3, it came with the stock Darkglass Tone Capsule. The DGTC is a very nice preamp in its own right. If you were to get a NG3, I would wait a bit before changing from the DGTC. You might be very happy with the results.

Here's a sample:
In the description of the sample, he listed the configuration as swamp ash, Maple neck, Wenge fingerboard, Super Fatty II pickups, Glockenklang preamp.
I know the base is a Dingwall FDV, but I think he's probably right in his description.
Of course, I don't want the exact same sound, but I'm asking because there has to be some compromise.

The tone and clarity of NG3 with DGTC is also amazing, so I'm considering sticking with it.

I’m guessing you’re a bit confused. The bass is a Z3. FDV is a type of pick up, an alternate to SF2s.
IMO if you wanted to Mimic something similar to this at a lesser cost I’d lean towards a combustion instead of a NG. the combustions rock an Ash body vs Alder like an NG. Maybe go with a PF fretboard vs maple.
from there you could swap in a Glockenklang Pre vs the EMG. You could even swap the stock production FD3s for some SF2. If it’s what your after both are worthy mods.
or perhaps a John Taylor model would give you something very desirable.
On dingwall's homepage, the pickups for the Z3 are listed as FDV, so I thought that was it, but then I looked again and it's a custom line. I had forgotten that I could change it to any pickup I wanted.

I'll probably buy a C3 and use it and if I like it, I'll consider modding it or buying a customized Z3.
Ah. I see. I think you’re right thou. The go to currently is FDVs but yes you can select whatever pick ups you like.

sounds like you have a plan and 2 great price levelled options
there is a killer looking purple ABZ(comparable wood spec) in the classifieds. The AB line is amazing but I will say the Z line is actually a different bass than the C or the AB. They feel different, sustain different, sound different. That’s not a knock against the lesser expensive models.
It’s like comparing a light weight MIM p to a Highmass, active, American Jazz. Same brand/different instruments
Sometimes great deals pop up on used ABs, to the point where it's not a massive jump up from the current going prices for the NG/C (unless you're also looking at those used).
Might be worth trying to hold out for a AB with specs close to what you want, so you can just buy once and not have to spend more later modding.

I suspect these two mods on any Dingwall with the same pickup locations would get the tone close enough to be basically equivalent in practical situations, such as live or recorded mixes.
The player experience, not so much.
Yeah, most noticeably, the necks on Z and AB basses are night and day vs the NG/C/D-Roc (while those are still really nice)
Facelift day! Jason dropped the tort PG off yesterday, just now put it on. Gives the reggae bass a little more of a vintage look methinks. Looks sharp with the sherwood green finish!
Not really a fan of pickguards or tort, but that slaps!
Your reggae bass is looking sharp! The inlay stickers made me think of BurningSky’s Rastaburst Dingwall.
I could never pull it off, but both Rasta Dingwalls are pretty sweet. BurningSky's is always nice to see.
I was thinking the same thing.
There's a used ABZ5 on a European site selling for 2100 euros including shipping which is what people are asking the used import models right now. Kind of makes the import models redundant when a deal like that pops up.
