Dingwall Owners Club

I’ll go $350.00 no problem. Send me an invoice via PayPal and I’ll even spring for shipping!

A gentle reminder, “how much is this bass I want to sell?” posts need a supporting membership in TB. Membership also gives you the ability to post “For Sale” ads in the classifieds.
Which puts your Dingwall in front of just the people who are always looking for Dingwalls.

Good luck!

Around 4k seems about the ballpark. Depends how fast you want it to move.

Does anyone else use or have experience with roasted ash neck?

I'm not sure whether to go with maple neck or roasted ash neck, as I've never had ash neck before.

Ash itself is pretty stiff, but doesn't roasting it carbonise it and make it even harder?
I'm worried about how this will affect the sound and feel.
Here’s a quick vid I did comparing my SJ with roasted ash and Super P with Wenge neck:
Roasted Ash vs Wenge Neck Comparison/Thoughts

Sounds/looks like it’s going to be a fantastic bass.
I’m quite a bit in the passive bass camp, but if I was commissioning a fresh build, I’d definitely do the Neve pre.
If you’re going for a solid finish, I’d lean Alder for the weight and tone on a Super.
I would also go for the S/P switches. Even if I rarely used them, I’d still rather have them than regrets.
Thank you very much.
I have decided to install a Neve amp.
The S/P switch is, well... It would be a shame, but I don't think I'll ever really use it, so I'm leaning towards leaving it out.

Fwiw

My SJ has an alder body, 2 pick ups (IE a lighter body) and a wenge/zirocote neck.

Balances beautifully.

It is a rare occasion a dingwall even insinuates neck dive. They are designed against this despite weight offsets in the components.

I wouldn’t stress that.

My Z3s have the ash/alder body wood combo and they do both come in on the heavier side. Not complaining. Just a statement.
It definitely helps.

Because Dingwall told me that wenge necks and roasted ash necks weigh the same!

I think I can relax about the neck dive on the alder body.

Thank you so much.
Your advice and videos are always a great help.

Congrats on your SJ5 build. What’s your experience with how the dual density body affects timbre on the lower strings? I’m really drawn by how solid the Sklar model tone is in every recording I’ve heard of it. Is the extra weight worth any improved low end definition and more even tone across the strings?

Also, it seems the Neve preamp with Ptone +SFII pickups is working out well? I have a custom build coming up and like the SFII pickups but only have experience with the Darkglass pre in a Dingwall.
I believe the dual density wood is having a a great positive effect - as stongly as I believe in confirmation bias :) All I can say is I am very happy with the tone of the bass (inculding acoustically); lows are well defined (for a "normal" 35" scale), and highs seem warmer than my 37s - or 34s for that matter.

You may want to reach out to John and ask him the same question - he sampled more Dingwalls than any of us and my have a more informed and unbiased opinion. He did say that it was maybe the best sounding medium scale dingwall he sampled - but then again I was the client.

On the Neve + Ptone and SFiis - 100% achieved what I wanted to achieve: to complement a C5 with FD3n and an ABZ5 with FDvs (i.e. I wanted Dingwall's modern take on a warmer/more vintagey P/JB vibe bass). Respective volumes and tones work and match well individually and in all combinations. I like it so much that it's difficult to brush away thoughts of a Z3 or Sklar with the same pickups & preamp...

Ivan, by any chance do you know if Sheldon has a specific recommendation for cleaning/maintaining Roasted Ash? Standard Meguiar's approach? Mineral Oil?
I don’t, sorry. Ryan over at [email protected] usually replies pretty fast, though :)

Alright, I have my spec... nearly locked in. Going to think over it one more night then ship it off to secure it.

Z3, 5 string
Swamp Ash body
#1846 maple burl top (photo below)
custom finish
FD3s, Neve pre w/ toggles
Wenge neck
Ziricote fretboard
Speedo bars matching wood style
blue liminlay side dots
matching headstock, black hardware.

The only two things I'm at all wondering is if I should do Ebony fretboard, and if I should do Ash/Alder body.
I'm leaning away from Ash/Alder as it adds a good deal of weight, and while I'm not particularly weight conscience right now, who knows in the future.
Ziricote vs Ebony is coming down to aesthetics and I just can't choose, but I also think I can't go wrong. I may even just go back to Wenge, too.

Didn’t your last Z also have FD3s? Not to question your choices, but if so, is there any interest in a different pickup configuration? Might be nice to have different voices available. I’m a massive SF2 fanboy, so obviously they’d get a nod from me.
It does, though I also have a pair of FDVs that I bought at the same time as I was undecided then, too. Now you have me questioning that as well haha.

If it were me I’d go ebony over Zirocote. I like a hifi sound and my take away from ziricote it is has a bit of a damping effect.

I’m an FD3 fan boy too. I find the SF2 quite nice but smoother then my tastes desire.

I haven’t bonded with FDVs on multiple occasions. I wish I could say I have thou but they are my least favorited

For reference though, I just took my EMG DCX 45 loaded ABZ to practice for admittedly the first time. It was set up drop tuned with a .145 for 1 specific song previously and due to this hardly got any play time. I’ve tuned it back standard with more anppropriate strings and ran through the whole night with it this week. It was dynamite. I find the FD3s to offer me the closest comparison

I wish I could get the DCX pick ups in a 6 string dingwall shell( I asked dingwall and EMG and neither seemed to think it would work). Maybe I should try again.

It's going to look awesome with that beautiful burl on the headstock and body! 😍

If we're talking dream setup, I'd love for multicoil pickups and filter pres. The filter pre works pretty well on my test mule AB1! I had a dual-filter on each pickup, too. I gotta get a set of multicoil pickups made, then get the ol router going to plunge in some new shapes... just no time to do that right now at all.

At some point I need to try FD3s, I've only known the SF2 and FDVs and went with the SF2 for my in process build because I prefer the tonal character . I have a feeling the seemingly mid-forward FD3s + Neve may be a really good fit based on what I've heard on Youtube. Look forward to seeing your build!

Side note - I need to get a full picture like that of the top I went with.....

Thanks to the guys, I have my order specifications in place.

Super J 5-string 3x
Alder body
Roasted ash neck
Wenge fingerboard
Speedo inlay with 12th fret D
Neve pre
P-Tone in neck position
Super Fatty IIs in bridge and middle position
Matt Ducatti White finish
No pickguard

I had to compromise on some options due to price ....
Headmatching, S/P switch and Luminlay all had to go.

The S/P switch would have been a bit of a bummer, but I opted for a P-Tone neck pickup, so a neck pickup switch would have been pointless.

The heavier body gives me a stable balance, but the alder body and roasted ash is a combination I've never experienced before, so I'm scared.

But there was a lot of advice on TalkBass and also from John, my dealer, so I went for a roasted ash neck.

I'll pick it up when it's finished!

Is that a valid pickup combination? I thought p-tone couldn’t be used with super fatties.

If I may I a suggestion, I’d recommend getting the Luminlays 1st and upgrading the pickups later down the line.

It’s easier to swap the pickups than installing aftermarket luminlays.

Just my 2 cents :)

Ziricote fretboards can be beautiful.
