Dingwall QC is top notch. I’d spend money on trying strings before sending it out for a plec job.

There is Payson strings. He specializes in multiscale string sets, and offers lots of sets and singles. Email him if you don’t see what you want.

Likewise, Jason @Fretnation.com has tons for Dingwall experience and is a huge help with getting the strings you will like.

There are plenty of string choices.

I never liked the low B very much, coming from a lifetime of four strings, so I would string mine E-C. A 37” E string is very cool. The C gave me room to run and opened up all kinds of chords. You could go E-B is you are used to guitar.

I started by buying a few single C strings from FretNation and just moved the existing strings over a slot. (If they are cut long enough) Otherwise just my favorite extra long four string set and a single C.

Give it some time. That B is big and slow, and osillates in a wide circle. It took me a long time to rewire my brain after four strings.

In the realm of "everything is possible with the right tools", it could be done. It'd be a substantial undertaking, though.
You'd need to get a Neve preamp, which aren't yet available outside of an instrument.
You'd need to redo the switching and such as well since it's different.

So for all intents and purposes, as of right now it's not really possible since you can't source the preamp. Once (if) those are available, you _can_, but I imagine the time and $ to do so would be somewhat substantial.

From what I can tell, the overall body and neck are the same as a Combustion/NG, so depending on what you're after, it may be easier to do something like buy a Nashville and (as an example) have someone refinish it if you don't care for the color offering, or something :)

I am about to order a bass with the same specs, except for the pickups. What is your appreciation of the bass and what is it approximative Weight? Thanks

I am finalizing the last details before placing an order for a Canadian made Dingwall.

1) I want a light bass, Which after burger model is the lightest? ABZ, AB1 or AB2?

2) I both like Maple/maple and Wenge/wenge necks? What is your favorite, and do you have any recommandations?

3) I Will go passive because that is what I prefer, and I have 3 different outboard preamps. Are the series/parralel switches usefull with a passive set up?

4) on the 4 way rotary switch, is it possible to have the middle pickup alone instead of the neck pickup alone?

1. The ABZ is known and originally designed to be the lightest.

2. Go with your preference on neck woods. Dingwall makes phenomenal necks regardless of wood used. I love the wenge necks but a maple necked dingwall has never disappointed

3. Yea. The toggles still serve a purpose with substantial variations in output.

4. The Droc switch has this as an option or you could do an aftermarket switch with Mo Minas and get any customization you chose really.

If you are looking for light weight, go with an alder body, and ask them to pick out a light one.
Maple maple neck, but maybe birdeye fret board for some extra bling.

You could ask the shop which finishes weigh more, and consider a solid color paint rather than a figured top wood.

You might consider a two pickup model. With a Ptone at the neck and a hot Super Fatty bridge. The P tone is fixed in series, and the bridge could get a switch. But I usually wire both pickups to series and call it a day.

I still have plenty of variations with a four way rotary.

Keeping it simple is my mode. My Afterburner 1 four string weighs 7.5 lb. Flame maple top, maple neck with wenge fretboard, two pickups.

A couple points of note:

The ABZ is supposed to be the lighted model and is selected swamp ash bodies however I do agree alder is often very light and that would put you into an AB1

The Satin finish on the ABZ is also lighter then the solid paint finishes.

Birds Eye maple is sadly no longer an option due to inconsistent results. That said, every BEM fretboard I’ve had/have the privilege to play or own has been perfection. Maybe it was tough to source consistent quality stock?

I missed delivery today from UPS by about 5 minutes. So hopefully I'll have it in hand tomorrow.

My ash ABZ is right about 8# and one I used to have was actually under it. The ABZ's are definitely light basses!
