Dingwall Owners Club

You guys have me intregues about this shipping carton. Pics?!? lol.
LOL. Its a standard cardboard box that guitars are typically shipped in, however, the narrow end where (I think) most people cut the packing tape and open up the flap to pull out the guitar, is stapled (3 heavy duty staples) on each side. So you cant just cut the tape and open the flap. You have to cut the tape, and then either remove the staples or pop them loose to get the flap to open. In other words, the staples go from the outer carton through the flap "ears" on the inside.

That was really hard to explain hahaha

Might be ordering one of the SP1 5’s after the summer. The “shorter” scale seems much more up my alley. I haven’t played a normal 37” Dingwall but did manage to play an Ibanez fanned fret 5 a few months ago. It was 34.5 or 35 if I recall. Felt at that point a 37” would most likely be too far of a reach. Wasn’t a fan of the body shape or ergonomics of it and it suffered from what Jazz bass shapes do on me… push out and away from my body… I know it’s not a direct comparison.

P bass and Stingray shaped basses are infinitely more comfortable. 18mm string spacing is just barely bigger than the 17.5 that I’m super comfortable with. Curious about the neck shape on the SP1 as well.
It's great that you are considering a Dingwall, but please, try to find one to play. Your experience with the Ibanez has nothing to do with playing a Dingwall. It's not a comparison at all.

My Black SP1-5 from John Fox Bass. Black is hard to photograph, but I'm really liking the subtle sparkle and the gold pick guard combo. But the gold is not really gold. I don't know what it is, but the combo looks quite classy. I like the black color and black hardware.

I would say closer to bronze in person

Oh I agree. It’s not a comparison. I’ve wanted to get my hands on a Dingwall for years, but there’s no one carries them around central California nor anyone around on talkbass, at least there wasn’t when I asked last year.

A bass like a Dingwall is not going to be easy to find except in major cities. You could always do what I did, find a dealer with a good return policy and buy one. If you don't like it, you can send it back. You might be out $150 if you have to ship it back, but at least you'll get a chance at it.

That’s basically what I’ll hopefully be doing

Or take a road trip to a store with known stock. I’d rather pay for a hotel for a night then return shipping.

Good justification for a romantic getaway.
I had planned on heading down to Bass San Diego a few years ago, but then COVID shut everything down, and then the store closed :( Went a different route with 2 basses, both sold now lol. Dingwall has still been high on my “want to try list” for a decade now.

I remember you asking about it in this thread a while ago. You are a very patient person. I'd come up with an excuse to travel to a place where there's a Dingwall a long time ago. 😄
