Honestly my D-Roc standard does this more than any other bass I've played, including my NG3. Unplugged, it is the loudest and warmest sounding solid-body instrument I've ever encountered. Khaya body, maple neck, Pau ferro board - but I suspect it has more to do with the overall design of the instrument and hardware than with the wood choices.
I even posted about this difference between it and my NG3 (let alone my non-Dingwall basses) shortly after I got it, wondering about differences in neck construction, etc. Didn't get any replies. Maybe no one knew, or maybe import Dingwall posts without pictures aren't cool enough to gain traction.
Anyway I would be tempted to get something like an upgraded version of my D-Roc. Could only imagine a Canadian-made one being even better...
I did a similar thing. Got a beautiful Combustion 4 in hand and six days later had a DROC 5 on the way. I don’t regret it for a minute. I think the DROC sounds a bit more organic and has more growl than the combustion, but the obvious differences account for that. It’s also about 2 pounds lighter which I love for the 3-4 hour sets.
I also want an SP-1. It’s a real problem and the only cure is more Dingwalls.

Do you know if imported Dingwall basses have carbon rods or only the Canadian basses have some?

You're welcome! I know my NG has carbon rods (the early batches didn't) but I'm not sure about the D-Roc. I was actually wondering if the lack of carbon rods could be part of why the D-Roc is so much more resonant but no one seemed to know. The neck certainly seems thicker, but I don't know if that's the reason...

What's up! My custom build is due to get underway in around a months time and I'm yet to decide on what model I would like... (crazy right?!)
Your job is to (if possible) please give me some reasons as to which model is best for me...
Options are: AB1, AB2 or Z3 (unfortunately the ABZ being limited to a satin finish only puts it out of the question as I'm after a gloss)!
I have all of my specs figured out, barr the model itself.
I play in a grunge/rock/metal band and often play in the worship team at church on a Sunday, so versatility is important.
What are the differences tonally? Which is lightest? Any other comments?
I guess I'm just looking for information and your personal opinions.
Any help would be massively appreciated - thank you!

Some general info: Alder is the lightest body wood. Swamp ash is a little heavier. Alder is more mid centered tone wise than swamp ash, which is slightly scooped. I’ve owned many custom Dingwalls and my favorite neck and fingerboard wood is wenge. Looks, sounds, and feels great. FDV pickups and Darkglass preamp is a good combo. Like a jazz bass on steroids. If you want maximum bass I would lean towards Superfatty II pickups paired with the Neve pre. The Neve has a vintage tone control which works in both passive and active modes. Of the models you list the Z3 is the flagship and well worth the extra $$ in my opinion. The bridge is recessed into the body on the Z which adds sustain and punch.

Follow up to the Payson Flats - I like them a lot, but finally played them in a band setting at rehearsal and they really irritate my picking hand fingers. So, I'm going back to rounds. I know some people like used strings and the Payson Flats aren't cheap, so if someone wants them for their AB I'll save them when I change the strings and send them your way.

Waiting for my SP1 to arrive and I would love to replace the gold pick guard with a TORT. Please share where I can source one. Thanks.
Any reputable pickguard company would copy your pickguard. I like to use Chandler Pickguards, but I've used Pickguardian and WD with success. One of us will have to be without their pickguard for a little bit for this to happen.
