Definitely curious about using regular long scale strings on my Super J as well.
Today I peeled the plastic protective stick-ons from the SP1 pickups and the bass sounded better. Am I imagining this?

That plastic helps keep the mojo fresh. You should put it back on when you're not playing.

For those of you with a 5 string SP1 and a "regular" Dingwall, how is the scale length for the B? Most other Dingwalls are 37" for the B but the SP1 is 35". Any appreciable difference between the two?
i don't notice it, but i play 37, 35, 34, 34.25, 33.25, 30. i suppose 37 can feel stretched immediately after playing 30. But imho if going five, i say go 37… why only go part way?
that is why i went 4 for my super j… the goal was not to try and compete with my 37 ab1’s on low notes… rather improve on the classic j design and have an alternate with a different role/feel.

7 years with this. I went back and counted, and I'm sure I missed some, but in that time...
71 gigs, with 5 different bands. 4 tech or prog metal, 1 cover band for 90s/early 00s stuff. Unknown amount of hours played.
~50 different tracks laid with it.
~450 hours of individual practice (actual skill practice, not just messing around on songs and stuff). Yes I'm a data nerd and track how much I practice and on which instrument(s).
Lent out 3 times, each for anywhere from a week to about a month. Probably wont do that so much anymore, but, not opposed to putting it in someone's hands so they can try it out.
My main player overall - the other Dingwalls get practice and playtime, but, this one is the first I grab whenever possible.

I have an NG3 and now an SP1. The SP1 definitely feels more comfortable to me with its shorter length, but that 2” makes a big difference. My band doesn’t require a lot of notes below E, so I expect the SP1 to become my main instrument. If I played metal or R&B I’d probably stick with the NG.
I owned my first two Dingwall’s (5/6 string NG3’s) fairly recently. The B string’s were insanely good…best I’ve ever heard. Physically, I couldn’t get on with the overall bass scale length though.
Just received an SP1…the bass is way more comfortable—the B is fantastic…but I do hear a difference. While the 37” B was on another level, my smaller frame/old body just couldn’t physically enjoy it…: )

The 35" B on the Super (and I assume on the SP-!) series is good, but the 37" B is noticeably more clear. It's easier to hear/discern the second harmonic.

Ray, your Prima is a true work of art. I think I remember when that bass was at The Bass Shop. It was stunning. I'm sure the tones you can get out of it bring you true joy. Play it in the best of health.
