I'm looking at picking up a 4 string d-roc and theres some details my searching cant sort out. I see some people saying that at some point d-rocs started coming from the factory in BEAD? I want to run it in BEAD so it would make things easier if its already intended. Otherwise, what are the largest strings you have managed to fit on it? Essentially I'm wondering if i can use BEAD without filing the nut.

You can if you order a custom, you can even go a step lower and have it set up with f#. I never heard of non Canadian D-Roc's being setup in BEAD.

Pickup question for you folks
I have a z3 with FDVs in it that I primarily run with the bridge and middle pickup in Series in a death metal band (B standard tuning). It sounds absolutely incredible, but as someone who cant leave well enough alone, I am curious about FD3s.
For those of you also doing the Parallax multi band distortion thing or similar, does anyone have direct experience with both the FDVs and FD3s (or FD3n's in the combustions / NGs)
My curiosity was sparked knowing the NGs are pretty much purpose built for what I'm doing and the choice was made to use FD3n pickups in those.
Thoughts also welcome from those playing other genres too if you have experience with both

I read this yesterday and again today and I'm not sure what the question is. There's been quite a bit covered about FDV vs FD3 in this thread, and John Fox has some recordings comparing them as well IIRC. Not really sure if that helps you in your quest. I swapped the stock FD3N's to FDV's in my KK3 (Combustion Variant) specifically for my Prog Metal projects. To my ears the FDV's have more clarity & are more to my taste.
It's an easy swap, so well worth trying them both to see which you prefer.

Just me and my ears - I really dig pickups powered by AlNico V magnets. My two Supers have custom-spaced Nordstrand NP-4a pickups in Dingwall shells. I did this a few years before Sheldon formulated his split-P FDV's (I couldn't wait!). They totally float my boat with nickel roundwound strings. I also spec'd FDV pickups in my Glock-equipped AB-I with a D-Roc pickup switch so I can solo the middle pickup. It brings one of the voices of God to the earth! Clear and in your face tones.

Where did you get the shells to send nordstrand from? I've messaged Dingwall two or three times about ordering empty ones, but they havent gotten back to me. I know they're crazy busy all the time nowadays.
It's the other way around. Call or email Nordstrand, they will listen to what you're looking for and they will get the shells from Dingwall. I did that but eventually decided to stay with the stock piclups.
Interesting, when I reached out to Nordstrand before about it they said I would need to provide the shells. I'll hit them up again to confirm - maybe there was some miscommunication.
What made you end up choosing to stay with the stock pickups? (Which are fantastic and I don't mean to imply otherwise)
So, mine is a Super J with 2 pickups, but each of them has a parallel/series switch. I wanted it to sound like a traditional jazz bass. If I replace the pickups and put regular Nordstrand jazz pickups, I'd have dummy switches.
The 4-position knob has neck, both series, both parallel, and bridge. In the parallel position I can get close to a regular jazz sound, but volume drops considerably.
In the end I just decided to let the bass be what it was designed to be. If I really need a traditional jazz I have others I can pick instead.
Makes sense - something to consider is I've been told the Nordstrand Fat Stacks in their single coil mode are more in the realm of a traditional J pickup than the Big singles. You could then wire the toggle switches to put the Fat stacks in humbucking mode if you want something more mellow or are in an EM noisy environment.
That's at least something I've been mulling over.
I did these mods years ago when Dingwall wasn't so slammed with orders. They kindly shipped empty shells to Nordstrand for me for a small charge. They also made an AlNico V big split for the bridge position on my S-J/P.

I don't think PAs are $30k, right? They're more like $20k. Pedantic, I know. I'm still glad I got mine when they were "cheap", comparatively. I have that 6 string from Jason on Reverb in my watch list, but, that's more like a dream list haha. Incredible basses, and mine gets most of the play time!

28k cad plus 15% tax is over 32k cad. 30k cad is currently about 22k usd so maybe we are both right.
