Dingwall Owners Club

Yes, that is what it looks like. My guess is that is how the DBird was wired and my tech kept it like that when he put the 3X in. Now, that got me curious and I opened up my ABZ and AB1. They are both as they came from the factory as far as I know.

The ABZ (3x, FDV, Darkglass) appears to be wired the same way.

The ABI (3x, SFII, Neve preamp) however is wired differently.

The AB1 is s/p/s, which apparently is standard for 3X. Interesting to see your ABZ is also wired s/s/s - especially since D-Birds/D-Rocs usually come with their neck coils in parallel and only bridge and middle in series, afaik.
Sorry for the bit of a derail everyone. Here is a group shot of the collection for fun!

Yeah, I'm not the original owner, my friend was. Plus, a mutual friend played it on a tour for bit before I got it. It is entirely possible that one of them made that mod. I'll have to see if he remembers. Considering I never use the middle pickup, it is kind of all the same to me anyway. I was actually ordering a 2x ABZ when that AB1 popped up used, I jumped on it. Funnily enough, the one thing that I love about the 3x vs the 2x is it creates the greatest thumb rest ever designed.

I'm in a room full of basses (13, enough to feel incredibly lucky but tiny compared to some). Every single one is a 4 string with the exception of the 8 string I have.

I totally get all that, I just think it would make more sense to tell people "we heard you - we're gonna do it - it will take a little while". Though maybe they are doing that elsewhere and I just don't hear it. I also agree that turning Dingwall basses into a commodity (or just a "pump them out" kind of bass company) wouldn't be helpful, but it is frustrating sometimes that they have always had backlog issues. I've been playing Dingwalls for 15 years and this issue has never gone away, only lessened slightly.

I hear you. Prototypes are always at least a year out. I do my best to predict a realistic time frame, but I'm often overly optimistic. I'm working on that and trying to learn and do better.

We've always been back ordered. This is both good and bad. Good for customers as it keeps resale values high. Good for the company, it's employees and suppliers because with orders on the books, we can plan and budget. Manufacturers who run too close to the edge end up laying off employees and stretching out their payables when sales slow down. I personally don't want to run my company that way. Nobody likes to wait. That's never fun. We've made huge investments in people, equipment and systems to try and bring the wait time down, but demand is still growing. There is no perfect solution, but all things considered, it's better for everyone to have demand outstrip supply.

For customers, the wait is hard until the day the bass arrives. Then all is forgotten.

Honestly, so long as the instruments continue to be high quality and the wait time is communicated clearly, I think you’re right to keep a waitlist running indefinitely. It is part of the custom shop mystique.

Finally, with market changes being what they are I’m happy to lock in a price now for a future bass. If this were a commodities trade I fear you would be on the losing end.

I get the impression that the price locks are going to change. I imagine trying to figure out what prices should be for a 2 year down the road delivery can't be easy. If delivery ended up at a year instead of two, it might be easier to manage and be a more manageable wait.

I wonder how you would keep it at a year? You would need something like a lottery each month to prevent locking in two many orders, but give everyone a fait chance. But it doesn't seem fun to than loose the lottery each month.

The quantity of Zs on the market tells you a bit about the market …. 😵‍💫
Yeah. I was trying to side step that a little. Great time to be a buyer if you have money socked away. At a hunch, possibly going to see more hit the market, and maybe even some folks not being able to take delivery of customs too :(

Not sure why TB nuked the links. I was pretty clearly not affiliated with any of them, and they're still valid links (checked cos I shared them on another forum). Oh well. Easy to hit Reverb and search :)

I suppose you could just say "you're in line" and there is no price lock. Though finding out how much higher the bill is going to end up in 2 years wouldn't be fun. We'll have to see.

Got my first Dingwall on they way!! Placed an order with Ish just now for this beauty. Cannot wait to get playing with this one. Got a Sol on preorder that will be ready end of the year but this will tide me over nicely till then. Doing some happy dancing up in here!

There are not many 5 strings I’d trade my listed 6string for but link #2….. I’ve had eyes for that one since inception.

Link #3 is one of my old basses.

It was an amazing bass. Fit a more jazz, gospel type vibe vs rock/progressive/aggresive.

I want to share a thumb rest I made for my Z3. I designed it in CAD using an 3D printer and have made several revisions over the past week. I designed it to have the same height as the other strings and to mimic the feel of a lower string. It attaches to your Z3 or NG3 with no modifications (just uses the original pickup screws). People who anchor their thumb on the pickup will find it in the same position. However, if you are like me and you occasionally move your thumb to rest on the B or E string, this makes this transition so much more natural! It also extends about an inch closer to the neck, which is a great sweet spot for a warmer tone.

I’m considering making some more and offering them to people who are interested. What do you think?

I also wanted to add that the top of the thumb rest is perfectly parallel with the B string. The lower edge of the thumb rest (the edge closest to the B string) is purposefully not parallel to give more distance from the B string as you move closer to the neck.
