The Neve I have on my new Z and I'm still getting used to it. Most preamps I've used to just lightly accentuate my sound, not necesarily used the pre to "shape my tone". But, like @Selta said above, on the Neve you can really crank the EQ and it's not noisy like the DGTC or get really washed out with really broad sweeps like the EMG. Its very musical in that sense. That said, to me at least, the NEVE isnt very forgiving, it will highlight your bad technique but it also sounds great so wrong notes arent that bad 🤣 🤣.

IMO the EMG pre is pretty blah, not bad, not great, not offensive, nothing special either. A decent "utility" pre, but not nothing fancy.

Thank you, that was my read hearing lots of clips of it, but good to confirm that to some extent. I think I am pretty set on finding a Combustion with the Neve in it at this point :)


edit: found a deal I couldn't pass up on the JT, so I'll be joining the DIngwall club officially soon I think :cool:

Thanks for this! I pop into this thread every now and then because I've been thinking about getting a Dingwall, and today I saw this!
The spousal-unit insisted I order one, so I snagged the black 5-string. Delivery estimated at late next week.

Re preamps: At one time or another I have owned Dingwalls with the Glock, Neve, DGTC, and EMG, and every pickup Dingwall puts in their basses. I'm an onboard active preamp player. I generally liked the Glock except the treble was centered too high. And it was a tad bit too hifi to my ears. I had a Z3 with the Neve and Superfatty pickups. It produced glorious tone in both the bass and treble frequencies. Very forgiving in terms of tone adjustments. Then I acquired a SJ5 with the DGTC and FDV pickups, and the search for on board tone perfection was over. For me the high mid control in the DGTC is genius, at least to my ears. So much more usable than a standard treble pot. Plus having a mid control is another reason I prefer it to the Neve. I often need to make mid frequency adjustments on the fly when performing, e.g, scoop my tone when playing a slap bass song or solo. And I love the DGTC paired with FDV pickups. With the neck and bridge pickups selected, it comes the closest to the tone of a Fender Jazz, which is my reference standard on any bass. But the main thing is that you really can't go wrong with any Dingwall pre/preamp combo. Every combination that Dingwall chooses to put in their basses is very well thought out.

There's definitely a bigger scene if you play covers or more mainstream stuff, you can even make an ok living off of it, many of my friends do. Like almost everywhere else metal stuff is firmly in the underground.

Mine hasn't been picked up yet, but the tracking thing was send by Dingwall, not the retailer, so it looks like they're being sent directly. Which, I think, is good. It means they haven't been on a store display to be molested by shoppers. They'll come to us directly, fresh and with a setup straight from the manufacturer.

Me too.. i waffled back and forth between this and the Tort version.. really glad I went with black. To me the black screams rock and roll, dive bar, workhorse, etc.. 😆👍

What hard-shell is everyone rocking? For a Combustion or Afterburner.

Have seen the gator TSA recommended but also seen mixed things. The SKB 44 seems cool but doesn't really fit the combustion very well.

Would love some recs for a premium HSC.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, as I haven't even received the instrument yet, but would anyone happen to have a drawing or 3d model of the pickguard for the NG or John Taylor Sig (5 string)? They look to be the same overall shape, and probably same hole pattern.
I do 3d printing and CAD stuff, so I was thinking of making an alternate PG. Maybe with some printed-in graphics and/or plate textures.
I could remove and scan it when I have one, but that's a few extra steps and I'm fundamentally lazy.

Honestly, I had a late gig using the KK3 v2 last night- got home at midnight and played the SP1 until about 2:00am. I couldn't put it down! If it was a big kitty, it was purring like crazy.. Didn't realize such a small visual change would have an effect on my perception of the instrument itself.

Then again, I can't play red instruments live. Something about a red instrument on my body in front of a crowd does NOT work. Never has. In fact, I've never felt comfortable playing a red bass. So maybe the black PG is like mental "security blanket" over the stock copper and I just feel more "aligned" with it. Who knows, I'm kinda off my rocker anyway. 🤪

My only hope is that he can expand the staff at the Canadian factory. There are many reasons that's hard to do, but quicker turnaround times would, I think, help grow his company, brand, and reputation.

Thinking about swapping the Darkglass Preamp in my NG3 5 String, put a bunch of the common ones into AI to map out frequencies, interesting to see them all laid out next to each other.

Make me want to try the Mike Pop FlexCore, EQ positions all seem to be in the ballpark of what I'm looking for...
