I can't say enough good things about dealings with BSO. They have a whole section dedicated to multi-scale, fanned fret and extra long strings. Strings arrive in three or four days, the site remembers your previous orders for easy reorder, and they are happy to help with questions. You also earn bonus points as well as your TB discount. They threw in a free C string on my last order. If they aren't sure about a string they will pull it out and measure it. The little micro headstock tuners they sell in a two pack are sweet. All this and free shipping. BSO is my first choice.

Grand Wazzoo has great things to say about Sansone strings. I've asked BSO to check into getting some, but haven't seen them in the US yet.

I can't play stainless strings, (too sticky) and I know some folks have similar issues with nickel. (black, smelly fingertips) It's nice to have some choices.
The beauty of the Payson and Dingwall strings is perfect fit and tapers so you don't have to do much if any setup. Restringing with non-tapered strings can mean putting in some set up time on string height and intonation. I have an AB-1 strung with TI jazz flats and getting them dialed took some work. .136 B string! (It was well worth the work! They sound and play great on the AB-1.) You might need shorter saddle screws for fat, or non tapered strings. The brilliant design of the bridge means you can find the screws at any well stocked hardware store.

The Infeld Superalloy roundwound super longs worked on the AB-1 as well.

I am assuming the TI's were the long super long scale?
I am convinced these TI's are the best strings made.

I got my TI flats for the AB-1 from Rollerburg. I think he special ordered them. Thanks Jeff!
They were already cut, wound and nicely broken in.

So, I'm not sure what the particulars of that set are. Both the Super P/J's are strung with TI flats as well. The super series takes the regular length set. Jason at BSO will get you sorted out.

I really like the TI's.

I think today's project will be putting the new Dingwall nickels on the sixer. I'm going to try alchol soaking the Payson reduced core that have been going strong for months.

That particular set of TI flats I ordered from Gary Rosen at GuitarX. He called TI and custom ordered each gage and length, so they were perfect.
I highly recommend doing business with Gary, he is very thorough and very competitive on price.

I did try this set on my Prima Artist, and they worked perfectly, but to my recollection, GuitarX was cheaper.

(edit: I did have to enlarge the holes in the ball ends to fit the bridge posts, but that is not a problem with the AB series bridge)

I thought you Dingwall players were supposed to be nice. :D You trippled my outlay, by talking me out of the Combustion V4 and into buying this. Should get it tomorrow or Thursday. Now I just have a lot of stuff to sell to make up the difference in price. OK, so I think you actually did me a favour by skipping the gradual upgrades and going right to what I really want. It's everything I've been thinking would make the perfect bass, which for me, is one where the tone stays the same from string to string, only the pitch changes. I played it for an hour a few weeks ago and have been thinking about it since.

I know, that's what I was trying to say. Long term you've saved me some money. Short term, not so much. :D It is sweet and sounds even sweeter. If I was ordering it I would have just gone for the plain ash body. The spalted maple feels a bit showy, but I do like it. I've been mainly playing an '83 Steinberger L2 for the last few years, so this is the complete opposite visually.

I don't think that spalt is too showy at all. The black burst makes it subtle, but really haughty nevertheless. I think you'll be really happy with that!!

I was wondering if your sell off was a sign of you looking up the ladder. That's how the AB basses have always worked. They're so great for what you pay that it just makes you start thinking 'if THIS bass is that good, I wonder how a Z or a Prima would be...' then the next thing you know...

You both say 'showy' as if that was a bad thing. You know, just because you're the bass player doesn't mean you have to stand in a dark corner.

Actually the opposite!

I am sitting here weighing out the NG-2 and the Combustion V4. The AB1 does so much as a passive instrument. It is actually my first passive bass in 16 years. I have been playing actives, and the AB1 is really speaking to me right now. That said, I know eventually I will get that active crave. Something like the new Combustions could really be a good supporting bass. They also all seem to have an active/passive switch to boot. I dont expect them to replace the AB1, but they are tempting me a lot right now.

That is a beautiful, functional piece.

I was going to say that if my ABZ is a Porsche Boxster, then that is a 918. But there are really no good analogies for Sheldon's unique combination of industrial design, craftsmanship, engineering and art.
