Not impressed in general or was it the amplified sound? Bad E string? Too grey? Very curious. I won't be offended.Well, I'm one if the guys that tried it before you and wasn't that impressed...

Amplified. It felt great, just didn't blow me away, through the amp. It makes sense, now!

Maybe George needs to contact everybody who tried it and tell them what happened.
I doubt there would have been many serious buyers, at that price, just tyre-kickers, like me. 
I wouldn't have known there was a problem with it unless you had found it and told us, so no real impact to anyone else.

Interesting and honest. Transparency and follow through at resolving a difficult quality control issue instead of just sweeping it under the rug says a lot for the company. Kudos for Sheldon and crew.
QC slips seem to be rare with Sheldon's shop, but if you're human (which they are), they will happen. My only experience was with a nut that was not cut quite right on a SJ-4 I was evaluating a few years ago. It was only noticeable when hitting the open D with much enthusiasm.

Actually I have found that I dont play nearly as hard with my Dingwall. I used to be in a constant flux of my finger tips falling off on both hands. I have yet to get one blister since I got the AB1. It is both better tension, and my technique improving. All a win.
I have to work constantly to remind myself to simmer down. With 3000 watts you'd think I'd learn that I don't have to pull a Larry Graham to be heard.My right hand gets overly-enthusiastic on a regular basis.

Actually...I play with a pretty light touch, although it may not necessarily always seem that way. One of the reasons I got my first Dingwall is that I was having skin problems on my fingertips and while not caused by bass, it was exacerbated by it. This combined with playing long nights but with a lot of force was making my playing painful and at the end of a gig or the next day my hands were ruined...painful and swollen. I bought the AB 1 to learn finer control and rework my technique to be sustainable, controllable and even. Tighter string spacing and lower action were all part of that. A bit later on, I went in the studio for a friend and it called for something more aggressive and with a pick. I found playing a Jazz bass allowed me to hit hard and aggressively more effectively than the AB.
We've talked about this. Your AB was the bass I got to woodshed and re-learn my technique and take care of all those sub-conscious player-tics we all grow after a bunch of years. When I bought my V/Z I did lower the pickups just a little bit for clearance...but only a very little bit. I've had other players and viewers comment on what appears to be a light touch, which I can get without losing definition and attack.
So I am knocking around thoughts about new strings for my AB1. I have a set of dingwall steels on right now and I dig the tone, but I always have this want to try something different.
Has anyone here run D'Addario chrome flats on their Dingwall? I also wonder about the nickle Dingwall strings. Can anyone express the tonal/playability differences between these strings and the steels I currently have?
