I was able to play the first fanned-fret bass he made, and it knocked it right out of the park. Splendid instrument all-around. When I go custom that's who i'm going with.

I wish I had time to get better pics, cuz the finish on this bass is beautiful. It's very dark but not actually totally black around the edges. I've gotta ask Sheldon what name this finish has.

I picked it up from UPS and drove straight to funk ensemble practice, jammed around with it for an hour. It's 120% the bass that my ABZ5 was.

I don't really have much need for the active EQ, but it seems really powerful when engaged. I really like having a center detent on the tone control when in passive mode.

My wife weighed it for me (I'm at work right now) and its 8 lbs 13 oz, which is absurdly light for a 6. Imagine if Fender would've built this... It's weigh almost twice that and not play half as good!

Can't wait to get my 6 string chops back up to speed.

Had my first experience with a Dingwall the other day. All I can say is wow. I want one.

I've heard many good things about them and finally I got to have a crack of an ABZ 6 and an Afterburner I 5 string. I simply couldn't get over the sustain and clarity of these basses, like nothing I've ever heard before. Best B string I've ever encountered!

I also found it very easy to get used to the fan fret bizo, I can't explain it but it just felt so natural which is completely against what you think it will be like.

Seriously considering an Afterburner I 6 String now!

Nice! Good to have a couple in town. :) Be careful with UPS around here...I had some problems with them and the delivery of my AB... I default to FedEx if I can...

Yeah, I'll never accept UPS ever again. The truck was late, they claimed I wouldn't even get it this past weekend, different people told me different things about when I could pick it up... Finally got it sorted and had it held at the shipping hub since delivery would've happened when nobody was home.

The 6 string is awesome. I don't miss my 5 string, so this is just 5 +1. But it's revealing even more flaw in my technique... Need to work on my muting technique.

Also, the preamp is completely transparent when set flat, but I still prefer it in passive mode.

There are a lot of strings to keep quiet.

I use one of the Gruv Gear fret wraps, large size. Usually, it is pushed as far towards the nut as it will go, but I can pull it forward to kill ringing strings when playing further up the neck.

Because of the shape of the headstock, you can't just push it completely past the nut, so there is always some open string muting going on with the E and B. The rest of the strings are clear for droning. I usually have it behind the first fret, or pushed back over the nut.

It tightens as you pull it forward, and really quiets things.

Not necessarily. I've received photos by e-mail attachment from the shop for two (out of four) of the Dingwall basses that I have ordered directly (my first was 'brokered' through Bass Northwest):

I was lucky mine did. 8 th from the bottom (SUnbusrt Sp/J5). Totally an amazing bass.

Wicked axes! Where I'm located, I have to buy through a local shop, so I'm assuming that this decreases my chances of getting the pictures? Oh well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

I don't know if your local shop is a Dingwall dealer, but if there is not a dealer within 100 miles of your location, you may deal directly with Barry Lamb (a very nice, very knowledgeable sales representative and fellow bassist) in getting your order in.
