Dingwall Owners Club

I am not sure, usually Sheldon would ask the owner of a bespoke bass being built for preference of strings, but it would be best to ask Mr. Sheldon Dingwall here: Invalid Link Removed
Ok, thanks!
I just did a comparison of both strings and really love the nickels, so I am putting in a request through my dealer for my new ABZ to be setup with their nickel strings. Hopefully Dingwall doesn't mind doing this. :bassist:

Not a problem. When my last bass (SP4) was about done, the new nickel strings were also. I requested via e-mail (to Barry) that the bass be set up with the new nickel strings. Dingwall likes having happy customers.

New Dingwall Day!

Visiting family in BC Canada. Drove up to Vernon to see their Dinwall selection and spent an hour with an NG2, an ABZ and a Super J 4.
The Super J is now mine, woohoo!

(Pics when I can get it home)

My worry is how to get it home. Carry on? Ship it? If I take it on the flights with me, I am mostly worried about the first leg, as that is a small turboprop which probably means a gate check. I don't know if they have enough room inside even if they wanted to.

First off, congratulations! No other jazz bass can 'stand up' to Sheldon's Super, IMO. You may want to inquire with your state's revenue/tax offices if there is a "use tax" that applies to your purchase. Mine were ordered directly and shipped to me from Sheldon's shop. I was informed by my state (Missouri) months after receiving them that I had to pay taxes plus penalties - ouch. :rollno:

Yesterday a photographer made my SP5 and I look pretty

Just got DTS' and now mine, black, maple neck/board, abalone blocked SP5. OMG!!!!! I'm not that fawn over a new bass guy, I normally won't even submit an opinion or review for at least a week, but this is a home run. I swear Mr D built it custom just for me, I'm over the moon crazy for it. Just spent an hour with it and it meets my every need. More later, just gotta go fondle it some more. :hyper::bassist::laugh::thumbsup:

It's fretless o'clock.

Let's be honest: multi-scale fretless isn't a breeze (and this is an easy song). But have you heard that tone ?

Stock strings, pickups in series, moderate treble cut, into a FEA DE-CL (comp section on throughout with mild settings, limiter section used as a boost for the ballsy bist), into a Darkglass B3K (fat, attack boost 1, drive and level halfway, blend 3/5)

Spent more time with my SP5, and it is even better playing while standing, everything falls into place, and at 7.5 lbs, those 2-3 hour practices will no longer be an issue. The blocks are helpful on this body style, the way it fits my body, I can see the fretboard, which is not possible on my AB1. And even more important, this is the first bass (other than the Hofner clone) I've ever played where I can easily hit the E4 to G1, or hit the D4-G3-G7 with just a finger spread instead of hand shifting. It's just what I've been looking for, plus didn't have to go 32 or 33" scale to get without sacrificing the superb B string. Playing Country, the B string and walking bass lines require more fretboard territory than Rock ever did.

Playing while seated took a little technique change, at first, the nut seemed awful close, but once I moved my picking forearm onto the rear contour instead of its usual place on the indented contour, everything fell into place. I'm sure it will become natural in short order.

I'm not sure what this all means for my AB1. I love playing the SP5 so much more, I may find myself hauling it back and forth to practice unless I score another (something I haven't done in years). The AB1 would be good for Rock, but my P4 and JPJ cover that well. I may need to use it for trade bait or sell to fund a build, time will tell I guess.

A question for some of you... I have an ABZ with the 3xFD3 option and I was doing some plucking exercises the other day. I noticed that it was almost impossible to get a good rhythm with my fingers over the pickups. The string spacing is so low that while I can pluck the strings, I have to use just the very tip of my fingers at a slightly different angle than I am used to. I'm just curious if you have experienced this sort of thing and what do you think about the value of time spent trying to work on this technique? I find that sometimes I want to drift towards the bridge while playing for the extra tension but I don't actually have any particular material at this time that requires it.
