Most C strings won't have any taper, so as long as they are long enough, and balance with the other strings, it's fine. D'Adarrio xl and DR sunbeams are my usual pick for C's.

I would just shift a five string set over and try with a single C.

At the nut, I have the tiniest rattle on the open D string. Not a deal breaker. A little intonation work at the initial set up and everything is fine. I raised the pickups a tad as well.

BSO.com has quite a few long scale sets for six strings, and you can buy individual strings for many sets. Since the low B is the big money, it's worth it. C strings are usually under $5. They have Dingwall sets as well. You'll have a couple extra B's for the switch back to standard.

Payson has a number of nickel round sets for Dingwalls. I really liked the reduced core with a D'Adarrio xl C.

It's super fun to have the higher voice for chords and solo lines. I don't really miss the low B, and it's much easier to mute the five string. I still miss that AB 1 six string, but I'm really digging the Super PJ strung this way. I should have done it years ago!

I figure I'll go back and forth as the mood strikes, since I've managed to get by without doing any work on the nut.

I figure I will leave my AB1 in standard 5 string tuning, and my Combustion as well. See how I like my Z1 E-C if I can figure out strings.

Yesterday I strung my fretless SJ5 with Ernie Ball Cobalt flats and so far I like it quite a bit. Not as smooth feeling as LaBellas but these were too mellow sounding for what I wanted to do.
Roundwounds worked fine but if I can use strings that don't wear down the fretboard and don't need to be changed as often that's a significant bonus.

Anyway, here's what it sounds like (parallel, tone wide open, through an SVT amp sim).

SJ5XXX, 34 weeks to go (approximately). So far away, I'm can't even get excited about it yet. Also, it's not as fun to hang out at TB, no planning the next bass fever, cruising the Classifieds, the Dingwall thread has been quiet as of late, sigh..... guess I'll spend more time over at Wildcatforums.net, just got a Wildcat 4x, time to get smarter about the sport.

Sorry for the slight derail, but Leo, along those lines, something about this time of year always makes me want an old Fender 4 string. I'm 32, but the Christmas season (my family has already celebrated thanksgiving since my sister was in town last week, so I've moved on) always imbues a sort of phantom nostalgia for the 60s. It's gotta be that MadMan-esque marketing campaign that is the NYC Christmas coupled with the big band era Christmas songs. I don't even have any practical use for a 4 string.

A buddy of mine told me my behavior is cyclical. I think I'm just hypersensitive to good marketing.

I'd say it's time to indulge in strings. Next up on the Super P/j, DR Hellborgs and then some DR Blues. I'm into nickel and nickel alloys. Both sets are fairly light, but I can get an even lighter set in the Blues if I like these. Getting the C string is the trick.

The Super J can run such a huge selection of strings, Bassstringsonline.com is my candy store. You can get lots of strings under the tree.

Then I get a style/method book and immerse, learn a tune or two I've always wanted to know.

Exploring the previously untapped pickup selector switch positions has been a revelation.

Yeah, I've thought of stringing my ABZ6 with an F#, but then I'd want to have a nut made just for that tuning, and I can't imagine there's a tech in this city who's comfortable working on a fanned fret instrument. Plus, all I'd be doing is rumbling my own bowels (maybe the neighbors, too).

I've had one of each, although they were quite different woods, so not sure how much of the sonic difference was just due to the sound-hole...

I thought the semi-hollow had a bit more "open-ness" to the mids and top-end, maybe slightly less "thickness", than the solid-body. Personally, I prefer the older, solid-body AB2.

It might have been you pointing the difference out to us that eventually lead to the ABHS EG.
