Up until this year, I had a "no single bass can be more than $2,000". I haven't crossed it yet, especially since most used Dingwall AB-1's go under $2k pretty routinely. However, a particular used one I'm eyeing would break that, and I'm thinking about buying a new one as well.

Luckily, so far, I've been keeping the Dingwalls under control. If one comes in, one goes out. I'm just switching to Canadian ones now, away from the Combustions (not knocking the Combustions, I just think the AB 1's are more for me).

I used to think that, but then one I realized I always had 3-5 $1000-$1500 instruments of which I played one 98% of the time and thought, "you know what, I've played enough instruments to know what I like/want. Why don't I just buy one really nice one and be done with it."

Well, it may have taken a few different revisions to figure out the one, but I did and its basically been my only bass for a year and a half and before that I had the same bass in a different finish without the missing pickup.

Also, having one bass makes finding a hanging spot for one's collection a lot easier.

I admire your discipline and I certainly agree with your philosophy. Now why oh why can I not stop ogling other Dingwalls and pining for them and scheming in my head to try and figure out a way to get them even though I can't afford more?????

Yeah. I'm trying to work with a local dealer on spec'ing and pricing out what a new Dingwall will be. I'm sure it'll be too much money.... but we'll see.

Ahh yes, the first step in the process. Just to get an idea, you know, just so you know it's too much and you'll not think about any more after that.

Step two, is start imagining yourself on stage, playing that spec'd Dingwall, and how AWESOME it would be, how it would sound and play, and how awesome you would be to be playing it, and you would be so happy to have just that one Dingwall.

The third step will be, yeah it's too much, BUT, maybe if I sell this other Dingwall, sell this cab, sell that spare amp and those pedals I don't really need. See if I can get an increase in my credit limit on that credit card, eat nothing but ramen soup for 14 months. Yeah, that's the ticket. That's not so bad. It's worth it!!

Rinse and repeat!

6-string ABZs use the rounded FD3 pickups; I don't think they make a squared 6-string FD3.

Yeah, I understand that.

I had a long conversation with Sheldon and ended up going with a 5-string ABI with a Swamp Ash body over a 5-string ABZ due to the pickups (I wanted the rounded FD3's rather than the squared ABZ pickups you see in the 5-string models)

I don't know for sure that they are, but have been wondering the same thing. I read that Sheldon thought that FD3's on the Super J delivered a more authentic classic jazz bass sound but that is about it...

Do you know the tone difference of the SF vs FD3?

Is the SF more slap-friendly (more clang)? And / or is it darker and fatter?
