I used to think that, but then one I realized I always had 3-5 $1000-$1500 instruments of which I played one 98% of the time and thought, "you know what, I've played enough instruments to know what I like/want. Why don't I just buy one really nice one and be done with it."

Well, it may have taken a few different revisions to figure out the one, but I did and its basically been my only bass for a year and a half and before that I had the same bass in a different finish without the missing pickup.

Also, having one bass makes finding a hanging spot for one's collection a lot easier.

I have her twin....in a 4 string. Great bass...actually ALL the Dingwalls are amazing...

For me, it's self-imposed. Affording more expensive instruments is certainly something I could do, I just haven't felt that I get enough back when I spend more than that (tried Fodera, Smith, Wal, Sadowsky and on and on). I don't even know what a new AB-1 runs - it's likely that it'll be jaw dropping and something I'll stay away from.

Honestly, once I get my next one and exile myself from TalkBass for a bit again, the DAS will subside

When I bought my AB-1 in 2005, it was 1600-1700$. Those days are gone.

Do you know the tone difference of the SF vs FD3?

Is the SF more slap-friendly (more clang)? And / or is it darker and fatter?

I can't really say. The only bass I've had with FD3's was my passive ABI which I sold four years ago. I don't slap, so I don't know which would be better, sorry. Maybe someone else can chime in...

I recently speced an ab1 at $3200 to start, by the time I chose the wood and glockenklang pre and neck carve I was already in the 4 grand territory

I might scale back to maple, but I gots to have that glockenklang

Don't forget, European economy is currently favoring the dollar. So it mite be a good time to get a Dingwall from an overseas dealer.

My observations about 2 vs 3 is that 3 looks cool and gives you a couple extra options but 2 feels more at home and is easier to play with a pick. Unless you're looking for a really punchy bridge tone, I'd think you can get most of what any playing situation would demand out of 2.

Waiting for Jason from BSO to send me a PayPal invoice for a 'custom' set of La Bella flats. The super-extra-long B; a super-light, extra-long E-G set; and a single C. I didn't like the gauges of the off-the-shelf La Bella flats that BSO sells for fanned-frets, and Jason was super cool about figuring out what I would like. I'm excited to try them out, my 'old' main bass, before my ABZ5, was a Fender P with TI Flats. I'll miss the sparkle for slap, but the Glock preamp has a nice treble boost.

Nice! Jason is great to deal with. I just installed a set of long scale TI flats on my Voodoo. Love the tone and they fit nicely. One extra wrap without silk on the G. The B is massive.
