Well, just got the offical full quotes on what my ideal AB I or AB II would be. Pretttttty dang hefty. I'm not sure I can swing that far north of $4k for a single bass :-/ I can just about get two used ones heh.
yeah there are plenty used AB's, no reason to go custom
personally, I'd only go custom for a Super J or PJ since they are much harder to find, especially with all the bells and whistles
I could quite literally purchase the AB II and red AB I in the classifieds and come out a little ahead :|. I really wish I could afford one... I feel like buying used is doing Sheldon a disservice.
I bought used and took some of the money I saved to buy a leather strap and some strings from Sheldon to show my appreciation.
Just remember that a majority of used dingwall's are being sold to fund the purchase of a new one
eh, Dingwalls are overpriced imo
if the demand was lower, the prices would be lower as well
I mean, don't get me wrong they are great basses, but the Super J is like any other bolt-on J clone except with fanned frets. If they didn't sell so fast I can almost guarantee they would be less, and the company would still profit. Could be wrong though.
I can't imagine feeling this way as a luthier. Knowing my basses were being played and doing well in the used market would give me great pride. It also clears out the market place and makes room for new inventory and grows my customer base. If I had to guess I'd say he'd probably rather you buy a used bass of his than no bass of his at all, though I've never run a business so I could be way off base.
