Thanks guys, especially for the photos that is awesome. I'm still not 100% sure which way to go, but I have a little while to decide before I place my deposit, so a bit more research and thinking is in order!

Question for the folks who've gone through the build process.... how often do you check in with your dealer? I know it's a many-weeks process start to finish, so going long intervals with no updates is expected.

The dealer has to call for updates, and really, once the decision is made, probably best to wait until around the scheduled time. The dealers are as anxious for the bass to come in as the customer is and wants the customer to have the best of experience with getting and enjoying the bass.

Thanks for doing this. I have the Luminlay ordered on the Canadian basses we have coming in; it just seems like a good idea.

That makes sense. I'm about two months in, and haven't heard a single thing since the day I placed the order. I thought that maybe by now the estimated build time would be know.

Agreed. For how little it costs (in the grand scheme of a Canadian Dingwall), it feels like a no brainer to me.

For reference, here's the main milestones from my recent build (which went direct because there's no dealer in range). I like knowing status but didn't want to be bugging them all the time, especially after Barry left and Sheldon was having to field the sales emails. So for the most part I tried to wait patiently.
  • July 7: Initial order email
  • July 10: Final order confirmation, ETA 8-9 months
  • July 11: Deposit paid
  • January 5: Status check from me, confirmed order sheet correct, ETA 3 months
  • February 19: Ready to build, final order confirmation
  • March 28: Status check, ETA 5 weeks
  • April 15: Build complete, balance paid
  • April 18: Shipped
No idea when they knew when my bass would enter the main build phase, but at my January check-in, Sheldon said the neck and body had been started (I assume to the where they'd be usable on any AB2, nothing specific to my build). So it was "being built" for a long time, though the main phase was just the final two months, which is more the part that matters.

So other than my couple of status checks, the main contacts were when the main build was about to start (7 months in) and when completed (9 months in). I'd expect without having your dealer check in to inquire about current ETAs it'd be the same type of thing (they'll hear when it's about ready to start in earnest and check with you that everything in the order is still correct, then when it's shipping out to them).

It's a lot of waiting without hearing anything, but of course there's a long queue and so not really much to hear about while you're simply "in line". Knowing that doesn't help with being antsy, though! :)

Awesome to know. I'm hoping that I'm still in the ~9 month build time line, which I believe has been upped to 12 months at some point. I, like you, do not want to bug anyone in the chain which is why I asked for input here. Your timeline is spot on the kind of info I needed. Sounds like I'm several months from the next communication, which is what I thought might be the case :).

I ordered Canadian basses in January and last I checked it was still the time I was given in January until completion, which I assume was based on production figures then. So no real info update and don't expect any until final build time. I picked out a nice Redwood top for the ABII and it was set aside when I placed the order.

I'm about 2 months behind you, then. :) At least I have plenty of playing and two more than capable AB's to keep me company and distracted.

Pretty much why I wanted to share what happened on mine, since other than if there's any changes to your build then much of the time it's just waiting for your turn in line, so not hearing anything's perfectly normal (based on my very scientific sample size of 1, at least ;)). You'd probably hear if the original ETA wasn't going to be realistic anymore for whatever reason (and I figure they'd've bumped the ETA rather than give one they weren't reasonably comfortable with). If you're concerned you could always check in about it just to satisfy yourself as to whether it's ~9 months total or longer, though waiting a few months would make any estimates even better since the waiting phase should be the part that's the biggest question mark as to how long it'll be, so the fewer builds in front of yours the better they should be able to estimate how long it'll wait and therefore how long to completion. :)

Sounds like yours and mine will potentially be stablemates. I ordered mine in the first few weeks of January.

The wait is really starting to kill me...

like the names of the basses, my fave Spector is call Enzian for a rare blue flower.. I have not named the Dingwall yet, can't think of a name for it.. My red Spector is Cayenne and the amber one is, well just Amber, my Fodera is named Holly for the top wood on it.. And the Stingray 5 I have, is getting traded tomorrow.. I have no name for the new bass that I am getting..

I put the Luminlay 3mm side dots in my AB-1 six string. About $35 and a couple hours install time.

Two hours to remove the neck, drill the old marker dots, super glue in a section of Luminlay rod, trim and repeat for each position. Sanded smooth the ends, dressed some frets, reinstalled the neck and did a string change and set up.

One rod did the bass with a bit left over.

Super easy. And a ton of fun. I bought the little led light charger. I loved the results. I always wanted led markers, but in real life they are a bit on the brash side. The Luminlay is a nice glow.
