I have an ABZ-5 with a Glock pre and I love it. I just recently installed a P-tone pickup in the neck position and it rendered the bass even more versatile. If you like the Jazz bass tone, then a P-tone is not really necessary, although adds some nice versatility. If you tend to go for a P sound, then I recommend the P-tone install. It beefs up the parallel jazz tone setting a bit (in the manner of a PJ), and adds a pretty damn good Precision tone when the p-tone in the neck position is soloed. Also, I like the series tone better with the P tone added.I'd suppose given the choice I'd prefer ash/maple anyways.
I mean, I'd love a Z3 but I'd need to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff to afford it. I want to try something out first just to make sure I'd like the fanned fret thing before I drop a ton. I was/am waiting for an NG-2 in black/green/blue to come up but it's just not happening so I might do something more drastic.
