I'd suppose given the choice I'd prefer ash/maple anyways.

I mean, I'd love a Z3 but I'd need to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff to afford it. I want to try something out first just to make sure I'd like the fanned fret thing before I drop a ton. I was/am waiting for an NG-2 in black/green/blue to come up but it's just not happening so I might do something more drastic.

I have an ABZ-5 with a Glock pre and I love it. I just recently installed a P-tone pickup in the neck position and it rendered the bass even more versatile. If you like the Jazz bass tone, then a P-tone is not really necessary, although adds some nice versatility. If you tend to go for a P sound, then I recommend the P-tone install. It beefs up the parallel jazz tone setting a bit (in the manner of a PJ), and adds a pretty damn good Precision tone when the p-tone in the neck position is soloed. Also, I like the series tone better with the P tone added.

Question for the folks who've gone through the build process.... how often do you check in with your dealer? I know it's a many-weeks process start to finish, so going long intervals with no updates is expected.

I don't care for luminlay at all, but to each their own. Had them side and face on an MTD, and they didn't stay lit long enough to provide useful in a theatre pit and on top of that I thought they cheapened the look of the instrument. Side dots are more function than form, but if I was in your spot and thought I could go without, I'd go for the more traditional side dot material.

I like them. I have them on two of my basses, and I found them to be handy just as a quick reference when the stage light got real dark. They make a little pen light sized LED for charging them back up quickly while on stage. I might order one one of these days.

Interesting. I'm currently planning my build and the Luminlay are currently on the spec sheet. I usually have the Fret FX leds on all of my basses ( ... FretFX ...   Attachable Illuminated LED Fret Markers    ) and they work a treat and Roz at FFX has said that he can custom make me a set for a Dingwall fanned bass.. however the idea of the luminlay units is appealing, but not if they don't last too long. My "usual" set time is approx 45-60 minutes... would a charge from the penlight last that long?

The FretFX also have the positive of you just turn it on and go, no having to recharge the system every set, so to speak. However, the downside is the battery (last 12 months or so) and the actual strip on the top of the fingerbaord, although you get used to that really quick.

It depends on what you consider "lasting." I found that on my MTD they would be glowing very faintly by the end of the set, almost to the point of being made null by the ambient room light. The would start out very bright but lose that charge rapidly. I don't know whether they've improved since then, but my feeling is that if you want them bright, you will be disappointed by the end of the set. If you want them visible for reference only, they may still be useful.

Julian (@CL400Peavey) and I had a gathering of our newly-created XXX Dingwalls last night.

The XXX is a REALLY killer pickup arrangement; it gives so many usable tones.

We also got a chance to compare amps and pedals, and Julian added another of his namesake amps to the stable.

His car was lowriding a bit on the way home, with 195# of Peavey all-tube fury in the trunk...

Regardless of which amps we tried, the Dingwalls always sounded great!

I cant believe how fast the neck on your 4 string Z felt. Really sleek. I think it is funny how we both ended up with similar pick up alignments on our own.

A sad day for the bassists community, R.I.P. johnbassdoherty

I am sad to inform you all that I have just heard from a friend that a member of this forum from Donegal in Ireland has passed away last Sunday victim of the big C.

John was a member of this forum as well as the Dingwall one, and Basschat in UK johnbassdoherty

Sheldon (Dingwall) recently built and shipped a new bass to John but he was too sick and only able to play if for a few days, he received it on the Monday and sadly he died the following Sunday.

Terrible news. Cancer is relentless and unforgiving. All the best to Johns family and friends and it was amazing that Sheldon was able to get his dream bass to him in time ...John has now taken it with him, to play without pain and illness. Keep healthy my friends!!! Enjoy life and enjoy these incredible instruments that we all love. Cheers to John!!

I've found that in extremely low to no-light settings the luminlays remain visible for quite a while (1.5-2 hours); at low to moderate light levels the difference is negligible as you can pretty much always see the side dots even if you don't see the glow.
