Well, I did go vintage white on my SJ5XXX build, so I get it's appeal
Not in the market, but I also think vintage white would look excellent on a D-bird. I used to dig the one the bassist for Mott the Hoople played. 
I'm just turning into Mister Passive here lately. Played the SJ5 passive last Sunday and was digging it.

My understanding is, for the D-bird, available colors are: Gunmetal metallic, Candy Purple metallic, Black metallic, and Vintage White. I don't know if they later plan to open them up to other custom colors or if custom colors can be added and these are standard - hope to have that clarified today. Still, Vintage White is what I am thinking this morning.

Oh goodness, I saw Mott the Hoople in 1972 and they put on one of the very best concerts I have ever seen in my whole life. They opened for Queen and blew them off the stage. I can't remember what bass was being used but I do remember they all were so tight together.Not in the market, but I also think vintage white would look excellent on a D-bird. Has anyone tried the Payson GW flats? I really liked the chrome flats I had on my Stingray back in the days of parallel fret basses, and I was wondering what the GW's would do on my AB1.

To me, the P-tone is very much worth it. I really wish it was available on 6 strings. I'm still on the hunt for a P-tone for a 5 string in the "old" shell, too. It's a very cool pickup for sure. I have some crappy clips of it on my soundcloud page if you want to hear examples of it.
Edit: Not sure why 2/3/4 are so quiet. They're all supposed to be normalized with each other. I can look into it when I get back from a long weekend get away I'm about to leave on.

I've been going back and forth about whether to get a P-Tone in my ABIXXX...I just can't decide without having played them both!
Might have a chat with my distributor/Sheldon and see if I can get both pickups shipped so I can A/B the two
At one time I spec'd my SJ5XXX with 3 Ptones, ultimately I canceled all 3 and went with ebony inlays instead, my rational being I could always add a Ptone myself but not the inlays. I have decided to run it through its paces using stock PUPS and see if anything else is needed. I may have a non-installed Ptone added to the order just in case. I do have a Ptone in the neck of my ABI, but seldom use it soloed, preferring the neck and bridge in series 80% of the time and in parallel the other 20%. Just food for thought.
The rationale is pretty sound. With the way you use it though, the P-tone would still sound different blended with the bridge in series and parallel than the standard pickup would though, wouldn't it?
Yeah maybe I just do the same and order a P-tone pickup to be sent with it...

Yes, maybe the Ptone is why I like the neck/bridge combination. It's an alder body wearing TI flats. The SJ5XXX will be swamp ash, so I really need to give it a chance and plan on loving it before I start looking for or expecting tones I don't like, plan on success rather than expecting failure...
